Sunderland vs Derby County Match Prediction

Sunderland v Derby County Betting Tips & Predictions

The first live game of the Championship season comes from the Stadium of Light on Friday evening (19:45) as relegated Sunderland take on Derby. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. These two sides are expected to be among the contenders for the promotion race with both sides going off around the same price in the outright betting. Sunderland are the slightly bigger price of the two as they look to adjust after relegation and to a new manager while Derby will hope to push on from a promising end of season run under former player and current boss Gary Rowett. These two sides have not met since March 2008 in a game that ended goalless but much has changed since then. Historically speaking it is Sunderland who have the best head-to-head record with it being February 2002 the last time Derby beat them in a league encounter.

Betting Tips & Predictions

Sometimes you can look at a price on the game and think neither side looks value. On the one-hand you have Sunderland who looked a mess last weekend against Celtic and then had the leaked video of Darren Gibson calling his team-mates out as soulless (and other stronger words). However, the price on Debry looks far too short even allowing for the problems the hosts are facing. Instead, try a few goalscorer plays on this match at decent value. Aiden McGeady is the first one I like after his move from Preston. Grayson got the best out of him last season for North End and if Derby are vulnerable anywhere it is down the flanks after they lost Cyrus Christie this summer. For Derby, I like the look of Craig Bryson if he makes the starting 11. It is likely to come down to him or Jacob Butterfield and he stood out more in the last friendly in the 45 minutes he played. He looked to get forward and do positive things and could prosper at double figure odds against a Sunderland defence that was all at sea last week.

Sunderland Preview

Last season was a mess for Sunderland as they limped out of the Premier League with little fight. The appointment of Simon Grayson as new Sunderland manager was disappointing to some but his Championship record with Preston shows he is the right man for the job though he will need some time to sort through the mess that he has inherited. Aiden McGeady, Lewis Grabban and James Vaughan will give them a new look front line replacing Jermain Defoe. Jordan Pickford has departed for Everton while the short-term contracts offered last season mean they are not stuck with lots of high wage earners. At home, they won just three matches all season and they must work to get the crowd back on side after a lot of (justifiable) walk outs in home fixtures. In just one of their last eight at the Stadium of Light did they manage to find the back of the net.

Sunderland Team News

Bryan Oviedo (calf) and Jan Kirchoff (knee) are doubts while Duncan Watmore and Patrick McNair will miss the first month of the season with Cruciate ligament issues.

Derby County Preview

It was a rollercoaster season for Derby last time out that saw them look like relegation candidates then into realistic play-off hopefuls before a drop that made them worry about going down before settling in ninth. Gary Rowett seems a good appointment at this level and will be given time to gel his own side together. It has been a poor transfer window for the Rams with key players Will Hughes and Tom Ince departing but former player Tom Huddlestone returned as has Curtis Davies and they should have the money to strengthen. They lost Tom Ince and Will Hughes meaning the midfield looks a little short of talent and pace right now. On the road, the East Midlands outfit must find a way to add more goals as they were among the lowest away scorers last season. Four of their last five Championship away ties saw both teams find the back of the net.

Derby County Team News

George Thorne (fractured leg) and Craig Forsyth (knee injury) are unlikely to play any part here. Darren Bent is also set to miss out following a hamstring injury in midweek.
