Sunderland vs Cardiff City Match Prediction

By Phill Barrs

This Saturday afternoon game (15:00) features two sides at opposite ends of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Sunderland were in action midweek in the League Cup where they travelled to Goodison Park to take on Everton and lost 3-0. In the league, they drew their last game 1-1 at the KC Stadium after taking the lead through James Vaughan they could not hold on and Hull rescued a point with eight minutes to go. Cardiff were not in League Cup in midweek after going out in the previous round in a home loss to Burton. In the Championship, they drew their previous game 1-1 at home to Sheffield Wednesday thanks to a 90th minute Sol Bamba goal. The Black Cats have had the better of recent meetings winning four of their last six clashes and losing just one of these. These two sides though have not met since the 2013/14 season so it is important not to read too much into this.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Cardiff are the favourites for this game and given the respective start to the season both sides have made it is hard to argue with this. I could not put anyone off backing the Welsh side but think better value can be found in other markets. The Bluebirds have found the net at least two times on four of seven occasions this season but this has slowed as they have come up against Sheffield Wednesday, Fulham and Preston in their last three all of whom have strong defences. I think they can get back among the goals here against a Black Cats outfit who have shipped two or more goals in three of the last five. The angle here then is backing Cardiff to score over 1.5 goals. Craig Bryson was handed a role behind the striker in the last game and the Scot who has netted for Derby this season looks value here in the goalscorer market. Take him to be the first scorer with the each-way option on him to net at any time.

Sunderland Preview

It has been a tough start to the Championship season for Sunderland who have taken just six points from their first eight fixtures. Their draw last time out at Hull put to an end a run of four straight league defeats. At home, they have lost each of their last three league games and drew the other on the opening day at home to Derby. A lack of goals in front of their own fans is an issue with just two netted for the season while they have conceded six times. James Vaughan who netted last time out will need to step up in front of goal with leading scorer Lewis Grabban out a few weeks with a hamstring injury. Around 56% of their goals have come in the first-half with 42% in the opening thirty minutes.

Sunderland Team News

Lewis Grabban (hamstring) is out for a few weeks while Patrick McNair (cruciate) is also ruled out. Aiden McGeady (hamstring), Duncan Watmore (cruciate), John O’Shea (calf) and Josh Maja (knee) are rated doubtful.

Cardiff City Preview

It has been a great start to the season who sit third on 17 points which is the same number as top-of-the-table Leeds. After winning their first five games the form has slid a little with two draws and one defeat from their last three. On the road, they lost their last one 3-0 at Preston but before that had taken seven points from visits to Burton, Wolves and Fulham. Five of the seven goals they have conceded this season have come on their travels. Nathaniel Mendez-Laing has netted four league goals this season but has not found the back of the net in his last four. Around 75% of their goals have come in the second-half with 33% in the final 15 minutes.

Cardiff City Team News

Frederic Gounongbe (hip) is a doubt while the game will come too soon for Rhys Healey (cruciate) and Kadeem Harris (ankle).
