Sunderland vs Burton Albion Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides in desperate need of points at the bottom of the table.  Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Sunderland made it three consecutive draws with a 2-2 result at Reading last time out in a game they were the better team in.  Paddy McNair brought them level and Lee Cattermole put them ahead but they could not hold out for all three points.

Burton picked up a much-needed victory as they saw off Derby 3-1 at their own ground last weekend.  Liam Boyce, Lukas Akins and Luke Murphy got the goals that probably flattered them but they will not be complaining.

The reverse fixture came late in November and marked the first occasion that these two had ever met.  It ended in a 2-0 road victory for the Black Cats thanks to a goal each from James Vaughan and George Honeyman.

Betting Tips and Predictions

This is a must win fixture for both sides with bookmakers giving Sunderland the edge due to them being at home.  I could not be siding with a side at odds on who have won just two home matches all season while Burton have won just two of their last nine either so they don’t offer much appeal.

Goals I suggest would be the way to play this with four of the last six the Brewers have been involved in going over 2.5 goals and three of the last five for the Black Cats.  I would take over 2.5 goals and as the game is a must win for both look for the second half to have over 1.5 goals.

Sunderland Preview

The Black Cats have taken six points from their last five but they still sit deep in relegation trouble.  Going into the weekend they were bottom on 34 points six away from safety with Wolves and Fulham still to play.

At the Stadium of Light, they are seven without a victory and have won just two times their all season.  They have the second worst home defence in the division and the third worst home attack.

Each of the last five Sunderland league games and seven of their last ten have seen both teams find the back of the net.  George Honeyman has three in his last five while Patrick McNair has two in his last three.

Sunderland Team News

Jason Steele (neck), John O’Shea (back), George Honeyman (illness), Billy Jones (knee), Darron Gibson, (groin), Jonny Williams, Joel Asoro and Bryan Oviedo (all hamstring) are doubts while Duncan Watmore (knee), Robbin Ruitter (broken finger), Jack Rodwell (hamstring), Tyias Browning (groin), Lynden Gooch and Donald Love (both knee) are out for the season.

Burton Albion Preview

Five points from their last four fixtures has kept alive the Brewers survival hopes though they are still five points from safety with just three to play.  Their remaining fixtures see road trips to Sunderland and Preston sandwiched around a home tie with Bolton.
Away from the Pirelli Stadium, they have won just one of the last six and two of the last nine matches.  They have found the back of the net at least once in each of their last three on the road and five of their last seven.
Each of the last two Burton have played in the Championship and four of the last six have gone over 2.5 goals.  Seven of the last nine that Albion have scored have come in the opening 45 minutes of a fixture.

Burton Albion Team News

Lloyd Dyer (hamstring), Tom Naylor (thigh), Damien McCrory (hamstring) are doubts while Willie Miller is a long-term absentee.
