Sunderland vs Aston Villa Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Tuesday evening (19:45) fixture features two sides in need of points at either end of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Sunderland drew their second successive game as they battled out a 1-1 draw with Millwall at the Den on Saturday. The Black Cats took the lead through Bryan Oviedo but could not hold out and in the end, will have been relieved to take a point. Aston Villa were scheduled to host QPR on Saturday afternoon but the game fell victim to the weather. The last time they played was on February 24th when they won 4-2 away to Sheffield Wednesday thanks to a goal each from Lewis Grabban, Glenn Whelan, Conor Hourihane and a Robert Sndograss penalty. The reverse fixture came in November in the Midlands and Villa won that game 2-1 thanks to a goal each from Albert Adomah and Joshua Onomah. Lewis Grabban netted for the Black Cats on that day but he has since made the move to Aston Villa (on loan from Bournemouth).

Betting Tips and Predictions

Aston Villa look the bet here given that they have won four of their last five on the road and only failed to take all the points from one previous visit to a bottom 12 side which was against their local rivals Birmingham. Sunderland meanwhile have lost nine of 17 at home and taken just five points when they have entertained top-half teams this season. I could not put anyone off backing Lewis Grabban to score here who has two in two and left the club in January after cancelling a loan deal in a move that left both sides with a bad taste in their mouth. At bigger prices though I like the look of John Terry each-way in the first goalscorer market as the Black Cats really struggled with set-pieces at the weekend. Steve Bruce will have observed this and will target the weakness and the former England captain is just the man to take advantage.

Sunderland Preview

The Black Cats are now seven without a victory and although three of their last five have ended in a draw they need to start picking up points. They are bottom of the table and three of their next four are against teams in the top ten. At the Stadium of Light, they have lost three of their last five and won just one of their last six. Only Burton (nine points) have taken a lower number of points at their own ground than the 12 the Wearsiders have picked up. Sunderland have seen both teams find the back of the net in four of their last seven Championship fixtures. Around 63% of the goals they have scored have come in the second 45 minutes.

Sunderland Team News

Jake Clarke-Salter while miss the game through suspension. Kazenga LuaLua (ankle), Marc Wilson, Darron Gibson, Patrick McNair (all groin) and Jack Rodwell (hamstring) are doubts while Duncan Watmore (knee) and Robin Ruitter (broken finger) are out for the season.

Aston Villa Preview

Victory over Sheffield Wednesday halted a two-game winless run for Villa and they have now taken 25 out of the last 30 points on offer. They need to keep this run going to keep pace with Cardiff who are four points above them in second. Away from Villa Park, it has been four victories and one defeat from their last five with the defeat coming at red-hot Fulham. In just one of their last six and two of their last nine on the road have they failed to score. Just one of the last four and two of their last six Aston Villa have played have gone over 2.5 league goals. Lewis Grabban has netted in his last two appearances while Robert Snodgrass has five in the last ten.

Aston Villa Team News

Jack Grealish (calf), Albert Adomah, Chris Samba, Andre Green (all hamstring), Gabby Agbonlahor and Jordan Lyden (both ankle) are doubts while Jonathan Kodjia (also ankle) and Jed Steer (dislocated shoulder) are long-term absentees
