Stoke City vs Wigan Athletic Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Wednesday evening (20:00) fixture is live on Sky Sports (behind the red button) and features a home side looking for their first victory of the season. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Stoke drew their second successive game as they twice came from behind to snatch a point at Preston. Erik Pieters and Peter Crouch got their goals to take a draw that their performance did not deserve. Wigan seemed on course for three points against Nottingham Forest but were twice pegged back and had to settle for one in a 2-2 draw. The result was harsh on them as they were the much better side and should have won comfortably. These two sides have not met since the 2012/13 season so it is hard to read too much into their head-to-head record. For what it is worth the Lancashire outfit are unbeaten in their last eight meetings.

Betting Tips and Predictions

This is one of those rare fixtures where you could make a logical argument for both sides representing value. If you believe Stoke are as strong as the ante-post odds had them then going off bigger than evens represents value while if you consider the way Wigan dominated a highly-touted Forest side at the weekend then they look too big. As it is I will look away from the match markets to find the value. All seven goals the Latics have scored this season have come in the opening hour so backing them to score before 60:00 here makes sense as does yes, they will net in the opening 45 minutes.

Stoke City Preview

The Potters were the ante-post favourites for the title but two draws and one defeat has shown them life will not be easy in the Championship. They sit 18th in the table while the expected goals data has them a little higher in 15th. At the Bet365 Stadium, they are now without a victory in their last nine dating back to January 20th. Each of the last four the Staffordshire outfit have played at their own ground have seen both teams net. Benik Afobe has netted two of the four goals that Stoke have scored in the Championship this season. They have not been ahead going into the break in any of their three this season being behind in two and level in one.

Stoke City Team News

Cuco Martina (stomach) is a doubt while Bruno Martins Indi (Achilles), Ibrahim Affellay and Sam Clucas (both knee) are ruled out.

Wigan Athletic Preview

The Latics have made a decent start to life in the Championship with a win, a draw and a narrow defeat. They sit 12th in the table while the expected goals data table believes they should be as high as fifth. Away from the DW Stadium, they have lost both games this season going down 3-2 to Villa in the league and 3-1 to Rotherham in the League Cup. You must go back to September 2017 for the last time the Lancashire outfit failed to net on the road. All four matches that Wigan have been involved with this season have seen both teams score and gone over 2.5 goals. Nick Powell has netted once in each of the three league fixtures.

Wigan Athletic Team News

Leandro da Silva Lopes, Kai Naismith (both fitness), Joe Garner (skull), Dan Burn (foot) and Darron Gibson (shin) are all expected to miss out.
