Stoke City Preview

Many who saw the game may well admit the scoreline flattered Chelsea, but that will come as no more than a mere consolation to manager Mark Hughes, who saw his team lose 4-0 at home last time out. Chelsea were far quicker out of the blocks than their opponents, with it taking just two minutes for Alvaro Morata to put the Blues in front before Pedro netted the second on the half hour mark. The introduction of Peter Crouch from the bench appeared to somewhat unsettle Antonio Conte’s side momentarily, but Morata scored twice in the space of five minutes to seal his hat-trick and put Chelsea home and dry. It’s now no wins in five in all competitions for the Potters, whose last - and only - Premier League win came on August 19 as they beat Arsenal 1-0. It’s hardly surprising their sole victory has come at home, with a return of four points from three games against Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea being considered a respectable return for a club like Stoke. Given that tough start, it would be unfair to say Hughes’ job is under threat, although the Welshman may start to feel the pressure should his side lose here and make it six games without a victory.

Stoke City Team News

Bruno Martins Indi (groin) and Stephen Ireland (broken leg) are both ruled out for Stoke, who have a number of defensive worries. Geoff Cameron, Kevin Wimmer (both hamstring) and Ryan Shawcross (back) will all be assessed after missing out last time out.

Southampton Preview

A lack of cutting edge was unsurprisingly Southampton’s achilles heel once again last weekend, falling to a 1-0 defeat against Manchester United where they really should’ve taken at least a point. Romelu Lukaku continued his scintillating form since making the switch to Old Trafford in the summer by netting the opener and what proved to be the game’s only goal in the 20th minute. This was not the free-flowing, attacking United we’ve seen for most of the season so far, with Southampton’s pressure forcing them to go more pragmatic, as Oriol Romeu went closest to turning home an equaliser in the second half. Instead it was United who held firm for the three points, as Mauricio Pellegrino’s men failed to score at home once again. It is the fourth time in five matches this term that the Saints have drawn a blank at St. Mary’s, with it proving to be nine times in ten if last season’s run is also included. It seems the issue stands far deeper than just at the feet of the manager, after Claude Puel was dismissed for a fairly turgid attacking brand of football.

Southampton Team News

Matt Targett (ankle) is Southampton’s only injury doubt ahead of this fixture.
