Stoke City vs Middlesbrough Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday evening (17:30) fixture is live on Sky Sports and features Tony Pulis returning to a Stoke side he managed twice. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Stoke stretched their unbeaten run to two with a 1-0 road success at Bristol City last weekend. Darren Fletcher got the only goal of the game as they were dominated by the Robins but still somehow (mostly Jack Butland) escaped with all three points.

Middlesbrough made it back-to-back draws with a 1-1 home tie against Derby thanks to an own-goal six minutes from time. In midweek, they were in League Cup action at home to Crystal Palace and won 1-0 thanks to a Lewis Wing goal.

These two were in different divisions last season so you have to go back to the 2016/17 Premier League campaign. The Potters are unbeaten in their three previous against the Teesiders.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Stoke have won just three times this season (and two of those came against sides in the bottom six) so I could not be backing them. Middlesbrough have won their last two on the road but a tendency to draw too many (four of their last seven) means I could not be trusting them either.

Two of the last four for the Potters and three of the last for Boro have been level going into the break and with two safety cautious managers this looks the way forward. The game will not have an early goal (set at 31:00) and will be level at the interval.

Stoke City Preview

The Potters are slowly starting to climb the Championship table after a slow start and have lost just one of their last six. They are into 13th though now face four straight against teams in the top-half.

At the Bet365 Stadium, they have lost two of their last three and won just three times this season. The Staffordshire unit have seen just one of their last six at their own place feature both teams netting.

Stoke have netted 19 goals this season which is a middle tier record in the division and have never netted more than two in a game. Their defence is looking strong in recent weeks shipping just two in their last five.

Stoke City Team News

Darren Fletcher, Thibaud Verlinden (both unknown), Peter Etebo and Mame Biram Diouf (both hamstring) are doubts while Ibrahim Afellay and Sam Clucas (both knee) are long-term absentees.

Middlesbrough Preview

Boro are unbeaten in three but just three victories from their last ten is a sign that not everything is right. They have a nice run coming up with each of their next five against teams currently in the bottom-half.

Away from the Riverside, they are unbeaten in their last three and winning the two previous matches. Mo Besic has netted in his last two appearances on the road while Britt Assombalonga has two in three on his travels.

Middlesbrough are struggling in front of goal with just 17 netted which is not good enough for a promotion hopeful. Their defence though is impressive conceding a league low eight goals from 15 fixtures.

Middlesbrough Team News

Ryan Shotton (knee) is the only doubt ahead of this fixture.
