Stoke City vs Chelsea Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Stoke City host Chelsea at the Bet365 Stadium on 23/09/17 as both sides look to return to winning ways in the Premier League. Stoke were beaten 2-1 away to Newcastle United last weekend, while Chelsea were held to a 0-0 draw at home to a stubborn Arsenal. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Stoke come into this contest without a win in their last four matches in all competitions. Chelsea meanwhile will be wary of both Manchester clubs stealing a march on them, so I’m expecting them to turn in a winning performance this weekend.

Stoke City Preview

Having held Manchester United to a draw the week prior, Mark Hughes will be questioning why there was such a drop off in his team’s performance levels after they were beaten 2-1 by Newcastle United. Matt Ritchie deliveries into the box proved to be their downfall, as the Scottish international crossed for Christian Atsu to score the Magpies’ opener. Stoke responded a little over ten minutes into the second half as Xherdan Shaqiri found the bottom corner from 20 yards out, but Jamaal Lascelles heading in a Ritchie corner to seal the three points for Rafa Benitez’s side. Having then crashed out of the League Cup to Bristol City in midweek, it’s now four games in succession without a win for Stoke, with their last victory coming in a 4-0 win over Rochdale in the previous round of the cup. However, they are still unbeaten at home this season in the Premier League, taking an impressive four points from a possible six from their two clashes with Arsenal and Manchester United. Chelsea is the final of a tough opening trio of home games as they look to end a three-match run without a win against the Blues.

Stoke City Team News

Geoff Cameron (hamstring), Stephen Ireland (broken leg) and Ibrahim Afellay (knee) are all set to miss out here. Ryan Shawcross (back) is in contention to return.

Chelsea Preview

Chelsea’s three-match win streak in the Premier League was brought to an end last time out as an uncharacteristically pragmatic Arsenal took a point from their visit to Stamford Bridge following a goalless draw. Antonio Conte’s side were fancied by most to pick up the three points but it was in fact Arsenal who enjoyed the best of the chances, most notably through a Danny Welbeck, Aaron Ramsey and, in particular, Alexandre Lacazette as Pedro spurned Chelsea’s best opportunity. It was something of an uncomfortable day for Chelsea who failed to ever really get going in an attacking sense, as they hope for much better this time around. They had no such problem on Wednesday evening after putting five goals past Nottingham Forest in the League Cup, as Michy Batshuayi staked his claim for a place in the starting XI with a hat-trick at Stamford Bridge. Last season’s champions have responded well to losing on the opening day of the campaign at home to Burnley, going unbeaten in their six matches since as they look to kick off what’s going to be a tough week of matches. Following Stoke, Chelsea travel to Atletico Madrid in midweek in the Champions League before hosting Manchester City in the Premier League next weekend.

Chelsea Team News

David Luiz misses out this weekend through suspension after seeing red against Arsenal. Danny Drinkwater (calf) and Pedro (ankle) are both doubts, with the latter’s injury meaning Eden Hazard could start for the first time this season.
