Stoke City vs Brentford Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon fixture (15:00) features two sides expected to be in the promotion mix this season. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Stoke had a tough start to life in the Championship as they ran into a confident Leeds side who defeated them 3-1. They found themselves one down after 15 minutes and two down at the break and a Benik Afobe penalty proved little more than a consolation effort. Brentford had a dream start to the season as they ran rampant on the opening day defeating Rotherham 5-1. Neal Maupay grabbed a brace for the London outfit while Sergi Canos, Ollie Watkins and Lewis MacLeod netted one each. These two sides have not met in a competitive match since 2002 so it is hard to take anything from their head-to-head record. For what it was worth it was the Midlands outfit won that day as they have done in seven of their last ten meetings.

Betting Tips and Predictions

It is hard to make a case for the prices to be wrong here in the match markets as Stoke are at home and deserved favourites but Brentford are not being under-estimated by the bookmakers following their opening day victory. Given the Bees hit five on the opening day and the Potters conceded three it might seem strange to suggest under 2.5 goals but that is where the value lies. Seven of the last ten competitive games at the BET365 Stadium have gone under 2.5 goals while each of the last eight the Bees have played on their travels have done the same. I think having shipped three at the weekend the Staffordshire outfit will approach this game cautious while 12 of 23 the London team played last season on the road were level going into the break so a half-time draw makes sense.

Stoke City Preview

The Potters had the third worst home record in the Premier League last season winning on just five occasions. They failed to win any of their last seven at their own ground losing five of these. The 20 home goals the Staffordshire outfit netted at the Bet365 Stadium was the joint-fourth worst in the division. Each of their last four and five of their last six in front of their own fans have seen both teams net. Stoke need to tighten up at the back at their own ground as the 30 they conceded was the joint-second highest total for Premier League teams last season. In none of their last six and just two of their last 18 at their own ground have they kept a clean sheet.

Stoke City Team News

Ibrahim Affellay (knee) is a doubt while Gary Rowett may look to change a side that fell flat on opening day.

Brentford Preview

The Bees were a decent road team last season with nine victories which was a top third record. They lost just one of their last six on their travels to end the season winning three of these. A shortage of goals was a problem when they played away from Griffin Park as the London outfit netted just 25 times a bottom-half performance. They have netted a combined three times from their last five away ties. Brentford did have a strong road defence conceding just 28 times which was the joint-seventh best record. Each of their last eight and nine of their last ten on the road went under 2.5 goals.

Brentford Team News

They have no injury worries or suspensions ahead of this fixture.
