Stoke City vs Birmingham City Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides in good form looking to climb out of the bottom-half of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Stoke made it back-to-back victories with a 1-0 defeat of Norwich in their last game before the international break. A Timm Klose own-goal proved the difference between the two sides in a match that the expected goals data feels should have ended in a draw.

Birmingham are now eight unbeaten in the league following a 3-1 home victory over Rotherham in their last match before the break. Lukas Jutkiewicz grabbed a hat-trick as they eased to a comfortable three points.

The last time these two sides were in the same division was the 2010/11 Premier League season so it is hard to reach much into the head-to-head record. For what it is worth the Blues have lost just one of their last ten against the Potters.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Stoke have shown improvement in recent weeks but they go off much too short to win this game here. Birmingham have gone unbeaten in their last four on the road which features Sheffield United, Leeds, Nottingham Forest and Brentford so they are capable of getting something here and I like them with a 0.5 goal start on the Asian Handicap.

Lukas Jutkiewicz is also worth following in the anytime goal scorer market given he has five goals from his last three fixtures.

Stoke City Preview

The Potters have had a mixed start to the season with four victories, four draws and four defeats from 12. This is not the beginning the pre-season favourites would have hoped to make but seven points from their last three suggests they can climb from 14th.

At the Bet365 Stadium, they have won three of six this season with these coming from their last four. Just one of their last five at their own ground have seen both teams find the back of the net.

Stoke have produced reasonable returns in attack scoring 17 times with Benik Afobe leading the way with four goals. Their defence has struggled conceding 18 times but two clean sheets in a row indicate they may be turning a corner here.

Stoke City Team News

Thibaud Verlinden (unknown), Mame Biram Diouf (hamstring), Ibrahim Afellay and Sam Clucas (both knee) are doubts.

Birmingham City Preview

The Blues are the divisional draw specialists with a league high eight from 12 matches sandwiched by two victories and two defeats. They sit in 17th though with five of their next eight against bottom-half sides will hope to rise up the table.

Away from St Andrew’s, they have won just once this season drawing on three occasions and losing twice. The second city outfit though are unbeaten in their last four on the road all of which are against top seven sides.

They have struggled a little for goals with just 13 of which six have been scored by Lukas Jutkiewicz and three by Che Adams. Their defence has been strong though and with 12 conceded is the fourth best in the division.

Birmingham City Team News

Craig Gardner (knock) is a doubt while David Davis (ankle) and Isaac Vassell (thigh) are long-term absentees.
