Stoke City vs Arsenal Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Stoke City host Arsenal at the Bet365 Stadium on 19/08/17 after contrasting results in their respective opening Premier League fixtures. Stoke fell to a 1-0 defeat at Everton on Saturday afternoon, whereas Arsenal twice came from behind to beat Leicester City 4-3 in the season’s curtain raiser. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Stoke just haven’t strengthened enough this summer and look a worse side than at the back end of last season. Although Arsenal still look suspect at the back, I’m expecting them to have too much for the home side here.

Stoke City Preview

The opening weekend of the Premier League season comes with many cliches, none perhaps more relevant to the optimistic Stoke City fan than “it’s just one game” following their 1-0 loss away to Everton. The Potters have been amongst the quietest clubs in the Premier League in terms of transfers thus far and this performance highlighted their need for players as Wayne Rooney’s excellent header sealed the win for the Toffees at Goodison Park. Everton appear to have more gears to move into, but it remains to be soon what the potential of this Stoke team really is, particularly after finishing last season so whimsically. Stretching back to last term, Mark Hughes has now seen his side win just two of their last thirteen Premier League games and the Welshman is now among the favourites to be the first managerial casualty of this season. Whispers of agitation amongst Stoke supporters have far from helped Hughes’ cause, likewise facing Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea in their first three home games will do little to relieve the building pressure.

Stoke City Team News

Stephen Ireland (broken leg) is still a few weeks away from returning to first-team action. Ibrahim Afellay (knee) is also missing.

Arsenal Preview

Old habits die hard and Arsenal’s knack of conceding goals will need to get gone quickly if they are to mount a sustained title challenge this season. Luckily, their quality in attack bailed them out this time around against Leicester, although they were forced to come from behind after Alexandre Lacazette’s opener was cancelled out by efforts from Shinji Okazaki and Jamie Vardy. Danny Welbeck equalised before half-time, but Vardy scored again after the break, as it was left to Arsene Wenger’s substitutes to make the telling difference. Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud were introduced on 67 minutes and each scored, with the latter bagging the winner, much to the relief of the drained home supporters. It was a far from perfect display, with mistakes aplenty at the back, but they once again showed how frightening they can be going forward. One bad habit they successfully eradicated last season was their struggles away to Stoke, winning 4-1 in their previous trip to the Bet365 Stadium and will look to take advantage of a manager and team under early pressure.

Arsenal Team News

Laurent Koscielny serves the final game of his suspension for this one, but Per Mertesacker (head) could return. Gabriel (knee), Santi Cazorla (achilles) and Alexis Sanchez (abdominal) are all unavailable.
