Sporting CP vs Barcelona Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Sporting Lisbon and Barcelona will be facing each other at the Estadio Jose Alvalade on Wednesday night, with both teams looking for their second victory of the Champions League group D. Sporting Lisbon put in an impeccable display in their group opener against Olympiakos Piraeus a fortnight ago, with Seydou Doumbia, Gelson Martins and Bruno Fernandes all getting on the scoresheet in the first half. On the other hand, Barcelona won comfortably 3-0 at home over the last season’s finalists Juventus thanks to a brace from Lionel Messi and another goal from Ivan Rakitic. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news, match stats and odds all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

I’m backing Barcelona to grab another victory here as it seems that not many teams look capable of keeping them out this season. They should be able to score a couple of goals in this one as well as they have netted 23 goals in the last seven games across all competitions, while Sporting have allowed at least two goals in two of their last five competitive fixtures. Furthermore, the previous two meetings between these two sides have seen at least four goals scored.

Barcelona to score in both halves at odds 5/6

Asian Handicap -1.5 on Barcelona at odds 41/40

Sporting CP saw over 1.5 goals in 8 out of their last 10 games played

Sporting CP saw over 1.5 goals in 3 out of their last 4 games played against Barcelona

Barcelona scored over 1.5 goals in 8 out of their last 10 games played

Barcelona are undefeated in all of their last 4 games against Sporting CP

Sporting CP Preview

Sporting have been impeccable in this early part of the 2017/18 competitive season, winning nine and drawing three of their opening twelve official games. They looked incredibly strong going forward against Olympiakos Piraeus on matchday one, having scored three first-half goals within the space of forty minutes. The Portuguese side followed this up with a Primeira Liga win over Tondela, but their recent form has seen them secure back-to-back draws against Maritimo in the League Cup and Moreirense in the Primeira Liga at the weekend. Sporting are now undefeated in three European fixtures this season as prior to their win over Olympiakos, they managed a nil-nil draw and a 1-5 away victory over FCSB in the Champions League play-offs. The Portuguese are in the Champions League group stage for a third time in the last four years, although they came only fourth last season behind Legia Warszawa, Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund. The bad news is that Sporting are winless in their last three Champions League home games, conceding two goals in two of these. However, their home form over the past six months has seen them lose just two of their last 15 games across all competitions. Bruno Fernandes and Bas Dost have been Sporting’s most dangerous players in the early part of their Primeira Liga campaign, as the pair bagged nine goals in the process.

Sporting CP Team News

Adrien Silva is the only doubtful player ahead of this clash.

Barcelona Preview

Barcelona, on the other hand, suffered a humiliating 5-1 aggregate defeat at the hands of Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup a month ago, but they have enjoyed an incredible run of form across all competitions ever since. Barcelona are currently on a seven-game winning streak across all competitions, including a 3-0 home victory over Juventus in the opening round of their Champions League group stage campaign. Lionel Messi has definitely inspired the team as he moved up to 99 European goals with his brace against Juventus a fortnight ago, and he has also been in fantastic shape domestically. Barcelona are the only team in La Liga to have won the opening six games and are the league’s topscorers at the moment with 20 goals under their belts. Leo Messi is the La Liga’s topscorer with nine goals and one assist in his six league appearances. The Blaugrana were expected to start struggling this season after the departure of Neymar, but they proved many wrong as they have already netted a huge tally of 23 goals in their most recent seven competitive fixtures. Barcelona will have to cope without the summer signing Ousmane Dembele who got injured a fortnight ago, but they have decent replacements in the shape of Gerard Deulofeu, Denis Suarez or Paco Alcacer.

Barcelona Team News

Rafinha and Ousmane Dembele are both missing through injury, but Arda Turan is back in training following his hamstring injury.
