Spain vs Italy Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Spain and Italy will be facing each other at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday night in arguably the most entertaining game of this World Cup qualifying round. Spain managed only a narrow 1-2 victory on the road at Macedonia last time out thanks to two first-half goals from David Silva and Diego Costa. On the flip side, Italy won 5-0 at home over Liechtenstein thanks to goals from Lorenzo Insigne, Andrea Belotti, Eder, Federico Bernardeschi and Manolo Gabbiadini. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

The reverse fixture ended as a 1-1 draw, but looking at these two squads I think that Spain should be able to grab all three points in this one. They have only lost once in their last twelve home games across all competitions, and are undefeated in eight home meetings with Italy.

Spain Preview

Spain haven’t lost a single game since their 2-0 defeat against Italy in the round of 16 of the Euro 2016 and head into this clash on the back of a ten-game unbeaten run across all competitions. Spain have won five and draw once in their six group fixtures throughout this World Cup qualifying campaign, including their 1-2 victory over Macedonia in their most recent qualifier. The Spaniards looked incredibly strong at both ends of the field throughout this qualifying campaign, scoring 21 goals while conceding just three. They sit at the top of the group G table tied on 16 points with the second-placed Italy, but they have a four goal better difference than the Italians. At home, Spain have only lost once in their last twelve home meetings across all competitions and are currently on a four-game unbeaten run. Furthermore, the Spaniards have scored at least two goals in ten of their last twelve home games. In addition, Spain are undefeated in their eight home meetings with Italy across all competitions, conceding just once in the process. Diego Costa is Spain’s topscorer throughout this qualifying campaign with five goals under his belt, while David Silva and Vitolo netted four goals each.

Spain Team News

Marco Asensio, Gerard Deulofeu and Kepa Arrizabalaga have all been called up along Marc Bartra and debutant Suso, who has enjoyed a strong start to the season with AC Milan. However, coach Julen Lopetegui has decided to leave Juan Mata, Ander Herrera, Javi Martínez, Paco Alcacer and Nolito at home.

Italy Preview

Italy have also enjoyed an excellent run of form over the past year, winning eight and drawing two of their last ten games across all competitions. The Italians haven’t won a single game in their eight visits to Spain, but they are aware that the winner of this tie will probably win Group G. Italy hold the same record as Spain throughout this qualifying campaign, registering five wins and one draw in six rounds. Gian Piero Ventura’s men looked solid in the final third recently, having scored at least two goals in each of their last five games across all competitions. Ciro Immobile and Andrea Belotti have both enjoyed a decent qualifying campaign, as the pair bagged nine goals between them. The Italian squad have been in transition since they managed to win the World Cup in 2006 and they have endured a disappointing run of form in the competition since then. Italy haven’t even made it out of the group stage in the previous two World Cup editions, but they looked pretty solid throughout this qualifying campaign so far and they seem to a force again with plenty of talented young players. Away from home, Italy have won each of their three qualifiers so far, scoring nine goals in the process.

Italy Team News

El Shaarawy and Riccardo Montolivo are both back in the squad, but coach Gian Piero Ventura has once again ignored Napoli’s midfielder Jorginho and the left back Mattia De Sciglio.
