Southampton vs West Ham United Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Southampton welcome West Ham United to St. Mary’s Stadium on 19/08/17 as both teams look to register their first Premier League wins of the season. Saints opened their season with a bore draw at home to Swansea, while West Ham were convincingly beaten 4-0 at Manchester United. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Both of these sides look relatively well matched coming into this fixture, although both ultimately disappointed on the opening weekend. I can see this being a draw, with three of the last five meetings between the two clubs at St. Mary’s ending honours even.

Southampton Preview

Southampton will hope their 0-0 draw at home to Swansea last time out isn’t a sign of things to come this season, after once again struggling to score goals at home. Dusan Tadic twice went close for the Saints and, in the second half, Maya Yoshida missed a glaring opportunity with a far-post header to add to their growing frustrations. Swansea rarely caused a threat to the home side’s defence but Saints, who scored just 17 goals in 19 home games last season, showed that more needs to be done if they are to avoid another infuriating home campaign. Mauricio Pellegrino has added just two new faces to the squad this summer in defender Jan Bednarek and a club record deal for midfielder Mario Lemina, who could make his debut this weekend. Stretching back to last season, Southampton have now failed to score in their last six home games in the Premier League, drawing a blank in seven of their last eight in total. Another home game the week after may or may not be ideal for them, although the players may see this as an opportunity to right their wrongs from the previous weeks.

Southampton Team News

Virgil van Dijk will miss out once again for Southampton after being told to train on his own. Club record signing Mario Lemina will hope to feature after being an unused substitute in his first appearance in the matchday squad.

West Ham United Preview

Slaven Bilic would’ve expected far more from his West Ham side at Old Trafford last time out, after seeing them slump to a 4-0 loss on the opening weekend of the season. Romelu Lukaku - as he always seems to - scored twice against the Hammers on his debut, netting once in each half to leave the hosts in a comfortable position. Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial added strikes in the closing minutes to add gloss to the scoreline, but in no means did the result flatter Jose Mourinho’s side, who were completely dominant. At no point did it really seem as if West Ham believed they could win the game, as they rolled over relatively easily without too many positives to take from the game. Javier Hernandez did, however, look lively on his Hammers debut, proving to be one of the few players whose intensity levels resembled anything like the Man United side. Bilic will likely set his side up to provide more of an attacking threat this time around and will hope for a repeat performance from their last trip to the south coast, as they came out 3-1 winners in February.

West Ham United Team News

West Ham fans will have to wait until September to see Andy Carroll feature this season due to a groin injury. Manuel Lanzini (knee) and Michail Antonio (hamstring) are touch and go, but Cheikhou Kouyate (knee) is ruled out.
