Southampton vs West Bromwich Albion Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Southampton host West Bromwich Albion at St. Mary’s Stadium on 21/10/17 as two mid-table teams face off on the south coast this weekend. Southampton drew 2-2 at home to Newcastle last weekend, with West Brom holding Leicester to a 1-1 draw in their last outing. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Southampton looked brighter last time out at home to Newcastle, while there is still the feeling that something’s not quite functioning as they’d hope at Leicester. I’m going for a home win, with Saints due to win on home turf.

Southampton Preview

Although their ceiling is probably higher than what they produced against Newcastle, Southampton will be able to take some optimism from the fact they posed an attacking threat in their 2-2 draw last Sunday. Isaac Hayden gave the Magpies the lead midway through the first half, but Manolo Gabbiadini equalised shortly after the break. Ayoze Perez quickly responded, making it 2-1 a minute later, but Gabbiadini scored from the penalty spot to ensure his team would come away from the contest with a point. That result means it’s now just one victory in seven games in all competitions for Southampton, managing just two clean sheets during that time. Add to the fact Saints have won just one game in their last three at home and one in their last ten stretching back to last season, with it crucial they are able to start turning St. Mary’s into a fortress once again. Currently 11th in the table, pressure will be on Mauricio Pellegrino to start delivering more consistent results should they continue on their current path.

Southampton Team News

Southampton have no fresh injury concerns ahead of this contest.

West Bromwich Albion Preview

Still West Brom are searching for another Premier League win after losing a lead to draw 1-1 away to Leicester evening on Monday Night Football. After a pretty tepid first half, it was the Baggies who took the lead at the King Power Stadium, doing so through Nacer Chadli’s well-taken free-kick. However, Riyad Mahrez scored an equaliser 10 minutes from time to deny the Baggies all three points, though it would not prove to be enough to save Craig Shakespeare’s job as the Leicester manager was dismissed the following day. Though Tony Pulis may not be in the same kind of danger as his counterpart on Monday evening, he will feel the need to end their winless run before an upcoming run of fixtures that follow this game. After Southampton, West Brom will face Man City, Chelsea and Spurs in three of their four following games, making it all the more important that they get a positive result from this fixture. Their recent record at St. Mary’s suggests such a result is possible, with the Baggies picking up victories in two of their last three visits to Southampton.

West Bromwich Albion Team News

Ben Foster (knee) is a doubt, while Oliver Burke (hamstring) could return to the squad after coming through training.
