Southampton vs Watford Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Southampton welcome Watford to St. Mary’s Stadium on 27/01/18 in the fourth round of the FA Cup. Southampton drew 1-1 at home to Tottenham last weekend, while Watford fell to a 2-0 defeat away to Leicester City. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Southampton produced their best performance in weeks during their 1-1 draw with Tottenham last time out, which should give them real confidence. The departure of Marco Silva may have an uplifting effect on the Watford squad, but I’m expecting the home side to come away with the win.

Southampton Preview

While the winless run may be ongoing, Southampton can have reason to feel far more upbeat heading into this weekend’s game after earning a hard-fought 1-1 draw at home to Tottenham Hotspur. Good link-up play between Ryan Bertrand and Dusan Tadic saw the former’s cross turned into his own net by Davinson Sanchez inside the first 15 minutes. The lead wasn’t to last, though, as Harry Kane headed home Spurs’ equaliser just three minutes later, which in turn proved to be the final goal of the encounter. Overall, it was a strong performance from the Saints, who managed to contain Tottenham for most of the second half, proving to be well worth the point taken from the game. Despite that result, Southampton still haven’t won in their last 11 Premier League games, with the only win in their last 12 being against Fulham in the previous round of the FA Cup. Despite the £75m sale of Virgil van Dijk, Southampton are still - at the time of writing - yet to reinvest that money in the squad and will need to do so, if performances this season and their league position are anything to go by. Southampton won all three of their home games to nil en route to the League Cup final last season, something they will hope to repeat here.

Southampton Team News

Maya Yoshida and Charlie Austin are both ruled out with hamstring problems.

Watford Preview

Nothing should ever come as a surprise when Watford and the Pozzo family are concerned, but eyebrows were certainly raised around the country when Marco Silva was sacked following the team’s 2-0 defeat to Leicester at the weekend. Jamie Vardy put the Foxes ahead just before half-time from the penalty spot, as their horrible run of form continued at the King Power Stadium. Riyad Mahrez delivered the dagger in stoppage time by scoring Leicester’s second of the game and ultimately leave the Watford owners with what they believed to be an inevitable decision. Silva’s flirtation with the then-vacant Everton job just months after taking over at Vicarage Road proved to be his undoing, with it being reported that the Watford players’ relationship with the manager had become strained in the aftermath of him doing so. With Javi Gracia now at the helm, the Hornets will now be looking to overturn a run of five successive defeats away from home, winning just one of nine after starting the season with three consecutive victories. Watford may be in horrific form, but they are fortunate enough to be facing a side who aren’t in any kind of form themselves at present.

Watford Team News

Younes Kaboul (foot), Miguel Britos (ankle), Kiko and Tom Cleverley (both hamstring) are all fitness doubts. Nathaniel Chalobah (knee) and Will Hughes (hamstring) are ruled out.
