Southampton vs Tottenham Hotspur Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Southampton face Tottenham Hotspur at St. Mary’s Stadium on 21/01/17 as the visitors aim to maintain their excellent recent form. Southampton drew 2-2 away to Watford last time out, while Tottenham were 4-0 winners at home to Everton. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Southampton are in serious danger of facing the drop this season after yet more poor results in recent weeks. Spurs, on the other hand, have turned a corner in recent weeks and I’m expecting their winning run to continue this weekend.

Southampton Preview

From the heights of the San Siro to a relegation battle - all within the space of 15 months for Southampton, whose plight was worsened after a 2-2 draw away to Watford last time out. James Ward-Prowse’s first-half double appeared to be sending Mauricio Pellegrino’s men on their way to a vital three points, as the midfielder also made it three goals in two games for himself. Despite the excellent performance in the first 45, it all proved to be undone in the second half as Andre Gray’s header reduced the deficit to one, before Abdoulaye Doucoure handed the ball home in the 90th minute to infuriate the away side. Sometimes when things aren’t going your way, decisions such as the missed handball tend to happen more frequently and more brutally. Now without a win in ten consecutive games in the Premier League, Pellegrino must be beginning to fear for his job after continuing to see his team struggle for form. Saints have failed to win in their last four games at St. Mary’s, and despite earning a reputation for being a solid team defensively, haven’t kept a clean sheet in six on home turf - hardly the kind of record you want to have when facing the league’s most lethal striker.

Southampton Team News

Maya Yoshida and Charlie Austin are both set to miss out with hamstring injuries.

Tottenham Hotspur Preview

Tottenham are beginning to look back at their best once again after producing a superb display in their 4-0 victory over Everton last weekend. Heung-Min Son opened the scoring after 26 minutes to put Spurs ahead, before Harry Kane broke yet another record, this time becoming the club’s all-time leading scorer in the Premier League after netting a second-half brace. Christian Eriksen added a fourth ten minutes from time as Spurs stayed within three points of the top four as they continue to apply pressure to Chelsea and Liverpool above them. With Kane firing on all cylinders once again, already reaching 20 league goals for the season, Tottenham will certainly fancy their chances of catching the teams above them in the table in the final 15 games of the season. Having lost four of five away from home by mid-December, Spurs have since bounced back by winning back-to-back games on the road, both of which have come to nil. With ten goals in his last six games, Kane is scoring goals at will at this moment in time and will be looking to replicate the hat-trick he scored against Southampton on Boxing Day, as well as extending his two-match scoring streak at St. Mary’s.

Tottenham Hotspur Team News

Toby Alderweireld (hamstring), Danny Rose (knee) and Harry Winks (ankle) are all injury doubts for the visitors.
