Southampton vs Swansea City Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Southampton host Swansea City at St. Mary’s Stadium on 12/08/17 in a meeting of two sides whose summer has been dominated about speculation regarding their respective star players. Mauricio Pellegrino will get his first taste of Premier League football this weekend after replacing Claude Puel in the summer, while Paul Clement is hoping for a season away from the bottom three after rescuing the Swans last term. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Swansea could be missing two of last season’s top scorers for their season opener, with Fernando Llorente injured and Gylfi Sigurdsson’s future still undecided. Southampton meanwhile are close to full strength and I’m expecting them to come away with the victory in Mauricio Pellegrino’s first game in charge.

Southampton Preview

Despite an 8th-placed finish and trip to the EFL Cup final, Claude Puel was dismissed by the Saints at the end of last season, although little has changed in terms of personnel since the Frenchman departed. Jan Bednarek is currently the only new addition to a squad which looks set to lose Virgil van Dijk, although Mario Lemina looks set to join from Juventus. On the face of it, Saints have been given a relatively nice start to the season with Swansea, West Ham, Huddersfield, Watford and Crystal Palace all featuring in their first five fixtures - all of which they will see as winnable games. However, their home form was amongst the worst in the division last season, ranking 17th for points gained at home after managing just six wins and seventeen goals from nineteen matches in front of their home fans. It was a case of jekyll and hyde in their two pre-season games at St. Mary’s, losing 4-0 to Augsburg and beating Sevilla 2-0.

Southampton Team News

Mauricio Pellegrino has a fully-fit squad to choose from for his opening match, with only Virgil van Dijk unavailable due to his transfer request.

Swansea City Preview

After ending last season with four wins from their last five games and an escape from relegation, Swansea have aspirations of pushing on this term after adding a couple of interesting signings in Roque Mesa and Tammy Abraham. Starting away from home, the Swans managed just four victories on the road last season, although they did win on last season’s opening day on the road at Burnley. It currently remains to be seen whether or not Gylfi Sigurdsson will be a Swansea player come the end of the window, but shall they keep hold of the Iceland international, it will be intriguing to see what sort of partnership he can strike up with Fernando Llorente and loanee Abraham in attack. With both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur to play in their first five fixtures, the early stages of the season will be a good indication of where this team find themselves and what we can expect to see from them this year.

Swansea City Team News

Nathan Dyer (achilles) and Fernando Llorente (broken arm) will both miss the season opener for the Swans. Tammy Abraham (groin) should be involved, while it remains unclear whether or not Gylfi Sigurdsson will be involved for the away side.
