Southampton vs Stoke City Match Prediction

By Bharath Ramm R

Southampton managed a late equaliser against Burnley to come away from the visit to the Turf Moor with a 1-1 draw. Ashley Barnes provided the hosts with a decisive goal in the 67th minute, and it seemed that Southampton were heading for a second consecutive league defeat. However, Manolo Gabbiadini came up with his fourth league goal of the season in injury time to salvage a point. Stoke City were involved in a 1-1 draw with Leicester City at the King Power Stadium. Xherdan Shaqiri provided the lead for Stoke just a couple of minutes before the half-time whistle. Despite the significant setback, Leicester pulled themselves back on level terms when Jack Butland scored an own goal in the 70th minute.

Here we have our SBAT match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Despite having shown plenty of improvement in their recent form, Southampton are winless in the last seven matches at the St Mary’s Stadium. The continued absence of Charlie Austin does not help in this regard, while Stoke City will be excited at the prospect of getting a draw on the road. Paul Lambert’s team have picked up three draws in the last four Premier League encounters. I can see a draw as the likely outcome in this game. The two outfits have been relatively low on goals. The absence of some key players for Southampton coupled with Shaqiri being a good run is likely to even out the game. Southampton and Stoke have averaged less than a goal per match in the last six home and away games respectively. I see great value in picking under 2.5 goals.

Southampton Preview

Southampton have shown a remarkable run of form in the last couple of months, as they have been able to completely allay fears of a sack for Mauricio Pellegrino. In the last nine games across all competitions, Southampton have been beaten only once – against a Liverpool team with the second best offensive record. A point against Burnley at the Turf Moor gives Southampton a chance to stay outside the bottom three, but the Saints need to quickly ramp up their away form. Southampton will be on the road for four consecutive matches once the Stoke City game has been dealt with. Charlie Austin is the club’s top scorer with six goals in the league.

Southampton Team News

Shane Long (hamstring), Steven Davies, Charlie Austin (hamstring), and Maya Yoshida (knee) miss out on the game due to injuries.

Stoke City Preview

Paul Lambert has been unable to get much in the name of victories at Stoke City, as he has only managed a single win in five Premier League fixtures. However, he has so far been able to succeed in the crucial task of keeping Stoke within touching distance of safety. Unlike West Brom who are on the verge of being cut off from the rest of the table, Stoke only need a point in order to move level with 17th placed Crystal Palace. After having suffered just one defeat – a narrow away loss – in the last five, there is certainly hope for Stoke. Shaqiri is the club’s top scorer with seven goals in the league.

Stoke City Team News

Stephen Ireland (calf) remains the only injury worry for manager Paul Lambert.
