Southampton vs Newcastle United Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Southampton welcome Newcastle United to St. Mary’s Stadium on 15/10/17 as the Premier League returns to our weekend schedule. Southampton will be looking to bounce back from their 2-1 defeat at Stoke City last time out as Newcastle look to build on a 1-1 draw at home to Liverpool. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Newcastle haven’t enjoyed their recent trips to the south coast, suffering heavy defeats in each of their last three visits to St. Mary’s. With Southampton also desperate for a victory and having the international break to group together, I’m going for a home win this weekend.

Southampton Preview

Mauricio Pellegrino has had anything but a smooth transition to becoming Southampton manager, seeing his side fall to back-to-back defeats during their 2-1 loss away to Stoke City prior to the international break. Something isn’t quite clicking for the Saints at present and they went in behind at the Bet365 Stadium when Mare Biram Diouf scored five minutes before the break. Although Maya Yoshida appeared to have salvaged a point for the away side when he equalised 15 minutes from time, Peter Crouch nodded home the winner for the Potters as Stoke moved level on points with Southampton through the victory. Southampton .have now won just one of their last five matches in the Premier League, scoring just twice during that time as their goalscoring problems continue from last season. It seems the issue stems from a much deeper root than simply Claude Puel’s negative brand of football from last term, with the forward trio of Shane Long, Charlie Austin and Manolo Gabbiadini netting just two Premier League goals between them all season. Saints have won just once in their first four games at home, failing to score in three of those games

Southampton Team News

Matt Targett (ankle) and Shane Long (hip) are both doubtful to play any part for the home side.

Newcastle United Preview

There may be a slight lack of quality in this Newcastle team but one thing that can’t be levelled at the group of players is a lack of spirit and resiliency, qualities which were once again on display at St. James’ Park during their visit from Liverpool. The Magpies were forced to come from behind against Jurgen Klopp’s side last time out, with Philippe Coutinho scoring the opener on 29 minutes with a fantastic effort from range. However, Newcastle responded seven minutes later, doing so with an element of fortune as Joselu scored the equaliser. From there, Newcastle were able to hold out for a well-earned draw, leaving them in the top half of the table heading into the international break in the process. Toon have made something of an inconsistent start to the season away from home so far, with all three of their away games ending 1-0 - two ending in defeat and one being a victory. Clearly Benitez hasn’t lose his mantra of trying to make sure his team’s don’t lose a game before taking a risk and trying to win it. Newcastle haven’t enjoyed travelling to Southampton since the Saints won promotion back to the Premier League in 2012, losing on all four visits to St. Mary’s by a combined aggregate scoreline of 13-1.

Newcastle United Team News

Paul Dummett (hamstring) and Massadio Haidara (knee) are both ruled out for this one.
