Southampton vs Leicester City Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Southampton face Leicester City at St. Mary’s Stadium on 13/12/17 as Claude Puel makes his first return to the south coast outfit. Southampton drew 1-1 at home to Arsenal on Sunday, with Leicester winning 3-2 at Newcastle on Saturday night. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Southampton will still be wondering how they failed to win against Arsenal at the weekend but will be encouraged by the nature of their performance. Leicester meanwhile impressed at Newcastle, but Southampton look due a win and I can see them getting that here.

Southampton Preview

Mauricio Pellegrino is unlikely to see his team dominate a game against a top-six side more overwhelmingly without taking three points after seeing his Southampton team draw 1-1 at home to Arsenal. In an ordinary game, a point against Arsenal would be seen as a solid result for a team like Southampton, but once they took a 3rd minute lead through Charlie Austin, it seemed as if the result was only going one way. Both Austin and Ryan Bertrand missed huge chances to double Southampton’s lead and their wastefulness was punished two minutes from time when Olivier Giroud headed home Arsenal’s equaliser. With that late sucker punch, Southampton have now won just one of their last seven games in the Premier League, though they can take heart from the fact they have performed well in their last four games against Everton, Manchester City, Bournemouth and Arsenal. However, they have taken just five points from a possible 12 during that time and would certainly exchange performances for results at this point. Having a striker in Austin in such form has contributed to the recent positive complexion placed upon the team, with the 28-year-old netting four goals in his last three starts.

Southampton Team News

Cedric Soares (hamstring) and Shane Long (calf) look set to miss out for Southampton here.

Leicester City Preview

Claude Puel’s side couldn’t be in much better form heading into the Frenchman’s return to Southampton, now sitting 8th in the Premier League table after their 3-2 win away to Newcastle at the weekend. The three points came after initially falling behind, with Joselu scoring the opening goal of the game after just four minutes, but goals from Riyad Mahrez and Demarai Gray either side of half-time respectively put Leicester in front. Dwight Gayle did bring Newcastle back onto level terms, but an Ayoze Perez own goal four minutes from time gave Leicester a lead they would not relinquish this time around. Now winning three on the bounce, Leicester are really starting to find form under Puel, finding themselves comfortably in the top half of the table and may now have their sights set to on catching Burnley in 7th. Puel earned a reputation for being a pragmatic coach during his time at Southampton, but a number of the forwards at Leicester have thrived under him, with Mahrez, Gray and Jamie Vardy all scoring under the Frenchman. Given the problems Mauricio Pellegrino has at Southampton are similar to that of Puel, perhaps the issue was more than just the manager’s preferred style of play.

Leicester City Team News

Matty James (achilles) remains missing for Leicester here.
