Southampton vs Huddersfield Town Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Southampton welcome Huddersfield to St. Mary’s Stadium on 23/12/17 as both sides look to stake their claim for a place in the top half. Southampton lost 1-0 away to Chelsea last time out, while Huddersfield were 4-1 winners at Watford. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Southampton are really struggling for confidence at this moment in time, putting real pressure on them to get a result here. However, Huddersfield will have had a real boost from their emphatic win at Watford and I’m not expecting them to lose here.

Southampton Preview

The wait for a win at Southampton continued at the weekend after Chelsea came away from their meeting at Stamford Bridge with a well-earned three points. It was a far from glamorous display from Antonio Conte’s side, who won by just a single goal, with Marcos Alonso bending a free-kick in off the post. Saints meanwhile struggled to ever get a foothold on the game, with the organised Chelsea securing one of the more comfortable wins they will enjoy this season. With no wins in their last five games in the Premier League, it’s slightly surprising to see that Mauricio Pellegrino’s men haven’t slipped further in the table, now finding themselves sat in 12th, with this game marking the midway stage of the season. It’s been an incredibly tough run of fixtures for the Saints in recent weeks, having already faced the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea, as well as having Tottenham and Manchester United away before the turn of the year. Three of Southampton’s four league wins this season have come at St. Mary’s, with three points here resulting in them returning back above Huddersfield into 11th in the table.

Southampton Team News

Cedric Soares is set to miss out once again after limping off against Chelsea last weekend.

Huddersfield Town Preview

After waiting months for a goal, never mind a point away from home, Huddersfield Town fans probably couldn’t believe their eyes last time out, as they saw their side secure an emphatic 4-1 win away to Watford on Saturday afternoon. Elliot Kachunga scored his first league goal of the season after just 6 minutes to give the Terriers the lead, before Aaron Mooy doubled their lead. Laurent Depoitre struck what was a decisive third, though Jonathan Hogg was sent off minutes before Abdoulaye Doucoure pulled one back for Watford. But Mooy’s penalty a minute from time ensured Huddersfield went back to Yorkshire with their second away win of the season. Both of their away wins so far this season have come by three-goal margins, while all of their defeats have come without them scoring a single goal themselves. David Wagner has made a call for consistency from his side, who have now won two of their last three games coming into this contest, scoring seven goals during that time. Regardless of the result here, Huddersfield fans would certainly have taken a mid-table place at this stage of the season had it been offered to them before a ball was kicked and could even find themselves in the top 10 with a positive result at St. Mary’s this weekend.

Huddersfield Town Team News

Philip Billing (ankle), Jon-Gorenc Stankovic (cruciate ligament) and Elliot Kachunga (knee) are ruled out. Michael Hefele (achilles) and Chris Lowe (foot) are both unlikely to feature.
