Southampton vs Everton Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Southampton welcome Everton to St. Mary’s Stadium on 26/11/17 in what has quickly become a must-win game for both teams. Southampton lost 3-0 away to Liverpool last weekend, while Everton suffered an embarrassing 5-1 drubbing at the hands of Atalanta in the Europa League. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Everton reached a new low on Thursday evening after being completely humbled by Serie A outfit Atalanta and it’s tough to see where their next win is going to come from. Southampton haven’t fared much better of late, but I’m expecting them to take the three points from this game.

Southampton Preview

Mauricio Pellegrino must really beginning to feel the pressure at Southampton as his side slipped to 14th in the Premier League table after Liverpool secured a comfortable 3-0 win over the Saints at Anfield. It was a strange situation for Virgil van Dijk having come so close to joining the Reds in the summer, but Pellegrino elected to start the Dutchman in defence - a decision he may have later come to regret. Mohamed Salah’s excellent 25-yard finish gave Liverpool the lead and they doubled their advantage when Salah exposed the gap in the defence left by van Dijk to grab his second of the game. Philippe Coutinho made it 3-0 midway through the second half as their was little Southampton resistance to the Liverpool domination. It’s now three games without a win for the south coast outfit, who have won just one of their last seven Premier League games - a 1-0 home victory against struggling West Bromwich Albion. What’s perhaps more concerning is the fact they have won just three games all season, leaving Pellegrino with 23% win ratio from his opening 13 games in charge. The cutthroat nature of management will leave the Argentinian with no illusions as to how important this game is for both him and the team, with both in need of a huge boost heading into a tough festive schedule. Southampton face Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United before the New Year, making it paramount they pick up three points here.

Southampton Team News

Oriol Romeu is suspended, while Mario Lemina (ankle) is a doubt, so James Ward-Prowse or Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg are likely to be recalled in midfield.

Everton Preview

Despite the good will in his corner, David Unsworth has done little in his short time to convince he is capable of taking the Everton job on a permanent basis after suffering a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Atalanta. Bryan Cristante’s double put Atalanta two goals to the good, and although Sandro Ramirez gave Everton hope, their complete collapse late in the second half told it’s own worrying story. Robin Gosens restored Atalanta’s two-goal lead, before Andreas Cornelius’ brace made it 5-1, as the Toffees conceded three goals in eight minutes. With just one win in their last eleven games, the last six of which Unsworth has been in charge for, this is looking increasingly like a side that will be in and around the bottom three come the end of the season. Everton have been simply dreadful away from home this calendar year, winning just two games on the road in 2017 in all competitions - one of which was a Europa League qualifier - from 20 games and lost 1-0 in their previous visit to St. Mary’s Stadium. Securing clarity over their managerial situation as soon as possible is essential to having any hope of saving their season, although the best they can hope for now is a mid-table finish at best.

Everton Team News

Seamus Coleman (broken leg) and Yannick Bolasie (cruciate ligament) Ramiro Funes Mori (knee) and Ross Barkley (hamstring) are both ruled out.
