Southampton vs Burnley Match Prediction

By Bharath Ramm R

Southampton look to avoid yet another relegation battle as Mark Hughes prepares for his first full season with the Saints. The former Manchester City manager has been given substantial transfer funds to overhaul the squad and results from pre-season hint that Southampton may be on the right track. Burnley undoubtedly prepare for a tough season ahead – even if they finished in a spectacular seventh-place last season. Sean Dyche has taken things in a careful manner with Burnley bringing in players with one eye on a potential relegation.

Here we have our SBAT match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Southampton are up against a Burnley team that will miss a number of key players for this encounter. The Clarets also have a mediocre record when it comes to playing at the St Mary’s Stadium – even if they picked up a victory in their last visit to the ground. Southampton are not looking forward to another season of relegation battle. Instead, the club have a squad capable of a top-10 finish and opening the season with a victory will add to the positivity built in pre-season.

Burnley were able to enjoy a lot of success last season by being tight at the back. In fact, Burnley ended up conceding 12 goals less than Arsenal and just two more than Spurs, who finished third in the table. Dyche will have the club maintain the familiar defensive solidarity even if they are unable to get a positive result. I would pick under 2.5 goals in the match.

Southampton Preview

Mark Hughes was able to keep Southampton in the top flight by the narrowest of margins last season, and there is increased pressure on the former Chelsea and Manchester United icon to get the Saints well clear of any relegation trouble this season. After having built on a strong squad, Hughes has the best opportunity to impart his style of football. He is helped by the presence of a fully fit squad. One of the key objectives this season may be to improve their home form after having ended up with the second worst home record last season.

Southampton Team News

There are no injury or suspension worries for Southampton coming into the game.

Burnley Preview

The Clarets were one of the surprise package of last season after managing to finish in the Europa League qualification places. However, the European qualification brings a whole deal of pressure and games and Burnley have already been playing competitive football for more than two weeks. Clubs that have a small squad do tend to struggle with the Europa League, but tiredness-related issues only crop up midway through the campaign. For now, Burnley will be able to ride on a wave of positivity provided by European football at Turf Moor. Dyche has had to contend with a number of key players and summer signings being unavailable for the opening few weeks of the season.

Burnley Team News

Chris Wood (hip), Matej Vydra (groin), Robert Brady (hamstring), Nick Pope (shoulder), Steven Defour (calf), and Tom Heaton (calf) are unavailable for manager Dyche.
