Southampton vs Burnley Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Southampton host Burnley at St. Mary’s Stadium on 04/11/17 in a top-half Premier League clash. Southampton drew 1-1 away to Brighton and Hove Albion last weekend, while Burnley defeated Newcastle 1-0 at Turf Moor. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Given the recent form of both teams, this isn’t likely to be the most entertaining game of the weekend’s round of fixtures. That said, I’m expecting Southampton to pick up the win as they look to continue their unbeaten run.

Southampton Preview

Last weekend’s all-south coast meeting ultimately ended in frustration for Southampton after they saw their half-time lead slip and result in a 1-1 draw with a spirited Brighton side. James Ward-Prowse’s superb free-kick crashed off the crossbar and fell invitingly to Steven Davis, who nodded the ball into the empty net to give Saints a 7th-minute lead. Despite this, they were unable to build on the period of dominance which followed and a decisive second goal never came. That resulted in Brighton forcing their way back into the game in the second half as Glenn Murray headed past Fraser Forster at his near post, leaving Mauricio Pellegrino’s side to settle for a point at the Amex Stadium and remain 10th in the Premier League table. It did at least extend Southampton’s unbeaten run to three straight games, winning once and drawing two since the end of the previous international break. Now, the aim is to win back-to-back wins for the first time since December last year, with the victories on that occasion coming against Everton and Middlesbrough, both of which ended 1-0. Pellegrino saw his side win by that scoreline in their last home game against West Brom and they will need more moments such as the one produced by Sofiane Boufal to continue winning games.

Southampton Team News

Mario Lemina (ankle) is missing through injury, while Jeremy Pied (groin) and Charlie Austin (knee) are both doubtful.

Burnley Preview

Burnley returned to winning ways at home last time out following a scrappy 1-0 victory against Newcastle United on Monday night. Given the pragmatic style of both teams and their emphasis on organisation and execution, this was never going to be a particularly attractive game for the neutral. Onlookers were forced to wait until the 74th minute for the opening goal, as Jeff Hendrick found the roof of the net from close range following productive work from Johann Berg Gudmundsson down the right wing. It continued Burnley’s unbeaten run at Turf Moor, with the team now without a defeat in their previous four games at home. Much of that has come down to their disciplined play, which has been highlighted by the fact there has been under 2.5 match goals in all five of their games at Turf Moor this term. Now they look to build on their extremely impressive away form, having kicked off the season with eight points from a possible 15 from their trips to Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool, Everton and Manchester City so far. The question is now to see if they can raise their game for a team not considered to be in the top bracket of Premier League sides as they have against teams competing in European competition this season.

Burnley Team News

Tom Heaton and Jonathan Walters are both missing with shoulder and knee problems respectively, although Chris Wood (hamstring) could return.
