Southampton vs Arsenal Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Southampton host Arsenal at St. Mary’s Stadium on 10/12/17 as both sides look to return to winning ways in the Premier League. Southampton drew 1-1 with Bournemouth last weekend, while Arsenal won 6-0 in the Europa League against BATE Borisov. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Arsenal enjoyed coming to Southampton last season, though they will still be wondering how they didn’t win against Manchester United last weekend. Southampton meanwhile have struggled against the top sides this season and I’m expecting Arsenal to take the three points here.

Southampton Preview

Southampton will have been delighted with their second-half performance at Bournemouth last weekend, but not near the same level of content with the end result after the south coast derby ended in a 1-1 draw. Bournemouth were the brighter side in the opening half and went in deservedly in front, with Ryan Fraser scoring three minutes before half-time. However, the introduction of Nathan Redmond during the break put Southampton on the front foot, with the side equalising through Charlie Austin’s third goal in three games. Despite the leveller, and the pressure that came after it, a winner was not to arrive in the meantime as Southampton were left to settle for a draw. Now winning just one of their last six in the Premier League, Pellegrino’s men are 11th in the table at this moment in time and are perhaps fortunate not to be lower in the table. The general standard of the Premier League in the bottom half of the table appears to have decreased this season, leaving Southampton closer to the top half than they may have been this time last season. That said, they have won two of their last three home games and have a striker in form in the shape of Austin, who could finally fix their striking problems.

Southampton Team News

Cedric Soares (hamstring) and Shane Long (calf) are both injury doubts for the home side here.

Arsenal Preview

Despite the relatively meaningless nature of the game, Arsenal’s squad players looked to prove a point as they defeated BATE Borisov 6-0 at the Emirates Stadium in the Europa League. Mathieu Debuchy, Theo Walcott and Jack Wilshere all scored in the first half, with Wilshere in particular impressing in the side to leave the Gunners to play the second half in cruise control. Dzianis Polyakov netted an own goal early in the second half, with Olivier Giroud and Mohamed Elneny both getting their names on the scoresheet, with the team making an emphatic entrance to the last 16 of the Europa League. It proved to be a satisfactory return to action for the team, particularly after their tough-to-take 3-1 loss to Manchester United at the weekend, where David de Gea made a record 14 Premier League saves in the game. After struggling away from home at the start of the season, Arsenal have since won two of their last three away games in the Premier League and won on both of their visits to St. Mary’s last season by an aggregate score of 7-0. Alexandre Lacazette looked sharp and in good form against Manchester United last weekend and they will be hoping for a similar impact from him this time around.

Arsenal Team News

Shkodran Mustafi (muscle) and Santi Cazorla (achilles) are missing for the away side, but Alexis Sanchez (hamstring) should feature.
