Slovenia Preview

Slovenia suffered a huge late blow at Wembley Stadium on Thursday night, with their chances of qualifying for the World Cup suffering a huge blow after they conceded in stoppage time to lose 1-0 to England. A resolute defensive display had put Srecko Katanec’s team in touching distance of a crucial point - one which would’ve seen them come into this game level on points with Slovakia with an even head-to-head record. However, Harry Kane poached in at the near post from Kyle Walker’s cross in the 93rd minute to book England’s place at Russia 2018 and leave Slovenia’s chances of doing so slim at best. Should they realise the fate expected of them, Slovenia will look back at the draw away to Lithuania in their first game of the qualifying campaign as a real blow, as well as the late goal they conceded away to Slovakia as they lost 1-0. Slovenia are a solid side at home, though, losing just one of their last seven games on home turf.

Scotland Preview

Scotland took a huge step towards cementing their place at the World Cup in Russia in their previous outing, scoring late on to leapfrog Slovakia into 2nd place in Group F. Gordon Strachan’s side have seemingly come from nowhere to now leave themselves with an incredible opportunity to qualify for their first major tournament this century, last featuring at France ‘98, with Russia marking 20 years since they last qualified. Martin Skrtel’s own goal saw Scotland run out 1-0 winners on the night, as Ikechi Anya’s low cross was helped in by the Slovakia captain under pressure from Chris Martin. Strachan’s side are now on the verge of creating history, should they be able to come away with the victory here, although they would still likely have to go through a play-off before they are able to really start dreaming of Russia. The Tartan Army have won four and drawn two of their last six matches ahead of this contest, leaving them to believe they have every chance of winning away, which they will likely need to be do with Slovakia facing Malta.
