Shrewsbury Town vs Charlton Athletic Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Sunday afternoon (17:15) fixture is a second-leg of the League One promotion play-off semi-final.  Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

The first leg ended in a 1-0 victory for Shrewsbury at Charlton with an 80th minute John Nolan strike giving them a big advantage.  It was a match in which the Addicks saw more of the ball but the Shrews had more scoring chances.

When these two teams met at the Meadow in April the London side won that game 2-0 so they have reasons to hope.  Jason Pearce and Josh Magennis were the goalscorers on that occasion.

Betting Tips and Predictions

The Shrews are the favourites to win the game and favourites to qualify as they have home advantage and are tough to beat at their own pace.  I think Charlton are still capable though and could not put anyone off backing them to qualify.

The bet I prefer is the game to be tight as the hosts protect their advantage while the no away goals rule means the visitors do not need to chase straight away.  I like the idea of no early goal which is set at 35:00 while the second-half to be the highest scoring 45 minutes also makes sense.

NO goal before 35:00

Second 45 minutes to be the highest scoring half

Shrewsbury Town Preview

The Shrews ended the season with just one victory in the last seven though the fact they were secure in third but could not make second might have been a valid excuse for a dip in performances.  They are looking to make the Championship for the first time since the league was restructured to the current format.

At the Meadow, they have won just one of their last four including defeats in two of these matches (which included at home to Charlton).  Three of their last five in front of their own fans have seen both teams find the back of the net.

Around 53% of the goals Shrewsbury have scored this season have come in the second-half with around 35% in the final 30 minutes.  Stefan Payne is their leading scorer this season with 11 goals while John Nolan has ten goals.

Charlton Athletic Preview

The Addicks ended the season with three victories from their last four so should still have hope going into the second leg despite being 1-0 down.  They are looking to return to the Championship after two seasons out of it.

Away from the Valley, they have been a mixed bag of late winning three time, losing three times and drawing one in their last seven.  They have managed to net at least once in eight of their last 11 on the road.

None of the last eight that Charlton have played have gone over 2.5 goals with each of the last seven seeing one side not score.  55% of the goals the London outfit have netted this season have come in the second-half.
