Sheffield Wednesday vs Reading Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture will have an implication on the bottom end of the Championship.  Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Sheffield Wednesday put to an end a two-game losing run last time out as they won 1-0 away to Hull.  Jordan Rhodes got the only goal of the match though the Owls can probably consider themselves a little lucky to get all three points.

Reading were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Sunderland in their last fixture though the Royals were a little lucky to come away with a point.  They took the lead through a Liam Kelly penalty only to fall behind and need a Yann Kermorgant goal to rescue a point.

The reverse fixture came in late November at the Madejski Stadium and it ended in a goalless draw.  The two sides met again in January at Hillsborough in the FA Cup and Wednesday won 3-1 thanks to a Atdhe Nuhiu brace and one from George Boyd with the Royals getting a late consolation from an own-goal.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Sheffield Wednesday are the favourites to win this game though the fact they have won just two of their last 13 at home does not make them appealing favourites.  Reading though are without a win in six on their travels losing five so they don’t appeal either.

Over 2.5 goals is the outsider of two here but has happened in eight of the last 11 Sheffield Wednesday have played so looks worth an interest.  Both teams get the bulk of their goals in the second-half so backing that to be the highest scoring 45 minutes’ appeals.

Sheffield Wednesday Preview

The Owls run of four victories and one draw from their last seven has confirmed their safety for next season.  They have three fixtures remaining which is home games with Reading and Norwich sandwiched around a road trip to Wolves.

At Hillsborough, they have struggled winning just one of their last five and two of their previous 13.  Four of their last five and five of their last seven in front of their own fans have seen both teams find the back of the net.

Atdhe Nuhiu has six goals in his last five appearances and grabbed a brace when these sides met in the FA Cup in January.  Around 65% of the league goals Sheffield Wednesday have scored this season have come in the second-half.

Sheffield Wednesday Team News

Lucas Joao, Atdhe Nuhiu, Daniel Pudil (all knocks), Ross Wallace (knee), and Kieran Westwood (groin) are doubts.  Steven Fletcher (knee), Gary Hooper, Kieran Lee (both hip), Sean Clare (ankle), Joost van Aken (ankle) and Morgan Fox (ankle) are all long-term absentees.

Reading Preview

It has been a mixed bag of late for the Royals with two victories, one draw and two defeats from their last five.  They are in 19th place and are five above Barnsley who are 22nd (though have a game in hand) and three above Birmingham in 21st.

Away from the Madejski Stadium, they are without a victory in their last six losing five of these.  Five of the last seven the Berkshire side have played on their travels have gone over 2.5 goals.

Just two of the last seven Reading have played this season have seen both teams find the back of the net.  Around 57% of the goals they have scored in the Championship this campaign have come in the second-half.

Reading Team News

Leandro Bacuna will miss the game through suspension.  Axel Andresson (ankle), Callum Harriott, Paul McShane (both hamstring), Tommy Elphick, Joe Mendez and Stephen Quinn (all knee) are doubts.  Jordan Obita (ligament) and Gareth McCleary (broken ankle) are out for the remainder of the season.
