Sheffield Wednesday vs Queens Park Rangers Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (16.00) game features two sides who had contrasting fortunes on the opening day of the Championship. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. It was a flat start to the season for Sheffield Wednesday who barely created a chance in their loss to Preston. Owls boss Carlos Carvalhal expressed his disappointment and confusion that his side could not raise their game. QPR got their campaign off to winning ways with a 2-0 opening day victory over Reading. They had Conor Washington to thank as he grabbed a brace with one of these coming from the penalty spot. Wednesday did the double over the Rs last season beating them 2-1 at Loftus Road and 1-0 at their own ground. In general, they have a good record over the London side going unbeaten in their last five meetings.

Betting Tips and Predictions

I can’t shake the feeling that all is not well at Sheffield Wednesday while these are the kind of games that Ian Holloway and QPR love, a road trip to a big name with the scent of blood in the air. I will take the London outfit in the draw double chance market as a point will be their main priority. In addition, try a little interest on Pawel Wszolek in the first goalscorer market as he played advanced in the 3-5-2 formation Holloway used last week. He will be asked to defend more here but at good odds looks worth an interest here.

Sheffield Wednesday Preview

Wednesday were one of the stronger home teams last season winning 15 of their 23 and losing just six times in front of their own fans. Ten of their last 12 home fixtures have seen exactly two or three goals. The Owls seems strangely disjointed with just 55% of their passes connecting on the opening day and a low 12 crosses to the frontman. One player who looks worth following in the scorer market is Glenn Loovens as the defender registered two shots in the game and one on target while Ross Wallace looked dangerous coming off the bench. In the League Cup, the Owls got a morale boosting victory though it did come against lower league opponents Chesterfield. A goal each from Gary Hooper, Steven Fletcher, Barry Bannan and Sam Hutchinson booked their place in the next round.

Queens Park Rangers Preview

Away from Loftus Road, QPR had an okay record of six wins and four draws from their 23 road games which puts them in the middle of the road table but still means they lost 13 fixtures. A feature of the Rs on the road at the end of last season was a struggle for goals having netted three times in their last six. Their victory over Reading was no fluke as they controlled possession and created more scoring chances and even had a strong 75% pass completion success. The 3-5-2 formation that they played last weekend worked well with Freeman, Scowen and Luongo linking well in midfield and wing-back Pawel Wszolek positioned quite forward. In midweek, the Hoops also booked their place in Round Two of the League Cup as they defeated Yeovil 1-0. Yeni N’Gbakoto got the only goal of the game in a match that also saw Northampton have a player dismissed.

Queens Park Rangers Team News

Steven Caulker (hip) is back in training though Conor Washington (back) is a slight concern. Grant Hall (tendon) is unlikely to feature while Jordan Cousins (hamstring) is out until September.
