Sheffield Wednesday vs Middlesbrough Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Friday evening (19:45) fixture is live on Sky Sports and features two sides in the top six of the Championship. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Sheffield Wednesday stretched their unbeaten run to four matches with a 2-1 road victory at Bristol City last time out. Lucas Joao grabbed the brace to give Wednesday the victory which the expected goals data suggests was quite lucky.

Middlesbrough saw their four-game unbeaten run come to an end as they suffered a 2-0 home loss to Nottingham Forest before the international break. The result was a little harsh on the Teesiders who deserved at least a point according to the expected goals data.

The two meetings between these sides saw Boro take four points following a 2-1 win at Hillsborough and a goalless draw at the Riverside. In fact, the Teesiders are now unbeaten in their last five battles winning four of these.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Bookmakers continue to overlook Sheffield Wednesday and while some of this is down to the expected goals data suggesting they are higher than they should. Maybe the Yorkshire outfit are being lucky or maybe like Reading a few seasons back they have the type of game that does not show well under these statistics. Either way I feel they should be backed here in the draw no bet market against a Boro side who were oddly flat against Nottingham Forest last time out before the break.

Lucas Joao has five for the season and got a brace in the last game and is going off at good value to score at any time in this fixture.

Sheffield Wednesday Preview

The Owls have had a good first quarter of the season with 12 games played they have won five, drawn four and lost just three. They sit sixth in the table though the expected goals data feels they have been lucky and has them as low as 22nd.

At Hillsborough, they are unbeaten in six but tend to draw too many with four of these six finishing all-square. Each of the six the Yorkshire side have played at their own ground have seen both teams net.

Sheffield Wednesday have the sixth best attack in the defence with 19 goals and they are led by Lucas Joao who has five. Their defence is the joint-eighth weakest in the division with 18 goals conceded and no clean sheet this season.

Sheffield Wednesday Team News

Marco Matias (hamstring) is a doubt while Joost van Aken (ankle), Sam Winnall (cruciate) and Kieran Lee (knee) are closing in on returns. Gary Hooper (groin) has suffered a setback and will be out for another month at least.

Middlesbrough Preview

Boro have made a good start to the season with six victories, four draws and just two defeats from their opening 12. They sit fourth in the table with 22 points which is where the expected goals data believes they should be.

Away from the Riverside, they have lost just once this season with three of the six ending in draws and two in victories. Only Swansea have a better road defence (three) than the four the Teesiders have conceded.

A total of 14 goals is concerning for a side with promotion aspirations and seven of these (four for Assombalonga and three for Braithwaite) have come from two players. Middesbrough have the best in the division having conceded just six times which is three lower than any other side.

Middlesbrough Team News

They have no injuries or suspensions ahead of this fixture.
