Sheffield Wednesday vs Leeds United Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Sunday lunchtime (12:15) game is a Yorkshire derby between two sides looking to bounce back after key defeats. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Sheffield Wednesday have had a disappointing week after they lost 4-2 at home to rivals Sheffield United and then in midweek went down 1-0 at Birmingham. The result was harsh on the Owls who matched the Blues for key chances created and controlled the possession but came back without a point. Leeds also suffered a key loss as they went down 3-1 away to Cardiff in a battle at the top of the table. United were two down in 37 minutes and then suffered further pain with the dismissal of Liam Cooper. They did manage a goal through Kemar Roofe but this was a mere consolation effort. These two sides last met at Hillsborough in August 2016 as Leeds beat them 2-0 with a goal each from Chris Wood and Marcus Antonsson. United did the double over their Yorkshire rivals last season taking the game at Elland Road 1-0 also.

Betting Tips and Predictions

After a tough week for these sides I think this is a game that neither can afford to lose so the draw looks appealing. The Owls have already drawn four times this season and this looks worth a small interest. Given that each of the five Wednesday have played at their own ground this season have seen both teams score while each of the last three Leeds have played have also seen goals at both ends so take the game to end in a score draw.

Sheffield Wednesday Preview

It has been an up and down season for Wednesday who started slowly, improved again but then have lost their last two games. They are in mid-table and pressure is clearly telling on manager Carlos Carvalhal who gave a bizarre press conference in midweek. At home, their defeat to the Blades was their first loss with the previous four ending with two draws and two victories. Each of their five fixtures in front of their own fans has seen both teams score with the last three going over 2.5 goals. Gary Hooper is in good form with the Scot grabbing five goals from his last six appearances for the Owls. 75% of their goals have come in the second-half with 50% coming between the 60th and 75th minute.

Sheffield Wednesday Team News

They have no registered injuries or suspensions.

Leeds United Preview

United have now lost two of their last three after going unbeaten in their first seven league fixtures.  After this game and the international break, they have three of their next four at Elland Road. On the road, they won their first three fixtures but since have lost each of their last two. Six of the eight goals that the Yorkshire outfit have shipped this season have come on their travels. Around 61% of their goals have come in the first-half with 50% between the 16th and 45th minute. The average time of their first goal conceded is the 42nd minute while in away matches it is the 46th minute.

Leeds United Team News

Liam Cooper will miss the game through suspension.
