Sheffield Wednesday vs Leeds United Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Friday evening (19:45) fixture is live on Sky Sports and has local bragging rights at stake in a Yorkshire derby.  Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Sheffield Wednesday continued their good form with a 2-1 road victory at Villa Park thanks to a goal each from Marco Matias (his second in three) and Steven Fletcher (his second in two).  The result probably flattered Wednesday a little but they have been at the wrong end of the expected goals data quite a few times themselves.

Leeds became the final team to lose their undefeated record in the Championship suffering a surprise 2-1 home loss to Birmingham. Egzijan Alioski netted for them in the 85th minute but they were undone by a Blues side who netted their only chances.

The two meetings between these sides last season were both won by the Owls who won 3-0 at Hillsborough and 2-1 at Elland Road.  Atdhe Nuhiu got a brace in one of these meetings and Gary Hooper in the other.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Despite just one win in their last four Leeds continue to be over-estimated by the bookmakers and against a Sheffield Wednesday side with just one loss in their last six they need to be opposed.  The Owls won both meetings between these sides last season and can be backed in the draw no bet market.

Marco Matias has two in his last three and he goes off at decent odds here to get on the scoresheet so back him to net at any time.

Sheffield Wednesday Preview

The Owls are in the middle of a good run with just one defeat from their last six with four victories in this spell.  They sit tenth in the Championship table though each of their next four are against top-eight opponents.

At Hillsborough, they are undefeated this season with two victories and two draws from their four league games.   Each of these four have seen both the Yorkshire outfit net and their opponents.

Sheffield Wednesday are the joint-sixth highest scorers in the division with 14 goals with five players having netted more than once.  They have also shipped 14 times which is the joint-fifth worst record in the league failing to keep a clean sheet.

Sheffield Wednesday Team News

Joost van Aken (ankle), Kieran Lee, Gary Hooper (both match fitness) are doubts while Fernando Forestieri is available following suspension.

Leeds United Preview

United suffered their first defeat of the season last weekend but they have now won just one of their last four.  They still sit top of the table but on goal-difference and now face three of their next four on the road.

Away from Elland Road, they are unbeaten with victories at Norwich and Derby and draws at Swansea and Millwall.  They have netted ten times on the road which makes them the top divisional road scorers.

Leeds are the second highest scorers in the division (behind West Brom) with 19 goals led by Kemar Roofe and his four.  At the back, they have conceded just seven times in nine which gives them the third best divisional defensive record.

Leeds United Team News

Patrick Bamford has been ruled out for three months with a knee injury. Kemar Roofe (calf), Pablo Hernandez (hamstring) and Gaetano Beradi (knee) are doubts.
