Sheffield Wednesday vs Ipswich Town Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Tuesday evening (19:45) fixture features two sides in the bottom-half of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Sheffield Wednesday put in a poor showing at the weekend as they were comprehensively beaten 4-0 by Bristol City. The Owls have now been hit for four in successive league matches. Ipswich put to an end a three-game winless run in their last fixture as they won 1-0 at Preston. This weekend they found themselves without a match as their tie with Hull was postponed. The reverse fixture came in November at Portman Road and it ended in a 2-2 draw making three of their last seven meetings to ended all-square. Joe Garner and Martyn Waghorn netted for Town while Gary Hooper (penalty) and Atdhe Nuhiu bagged for the Owls.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Given the poor performance Wednesday showed at the weekend and the fact they have won just one of their last nine at home and their extensive injury crisis I could not be backing them. Ipswich make a lot of sense and I could not put anyone off backing them but my personal preference is to back them in other ways than to win the match. The Owls have shipped four in each of their last two and face a Tractor Boys side who have netted in each of their last five on the road. It is true that on only of these occasions have they netted more than once but Preston, Norwich, Fulham and Bolton have strong home defences so this is no disgrace. The Yorkshire outfit though are shipping goals so take the Suffolk side to score over 1.5 goals and bet on them to net first.

Sheffield Wednesday Preview

The Owls have now lost three straight and won just one of their last 11 Championship fixtures. Wednesday are seven points above the bottom three and must take advantage of a run that sees three of their next four at their own ground. At Hillsborough, they have won just one of their last nine losing three of their last five. Only three sides (Reading, Sunderland and Burton) have conceded more home goals than the 25 that the Yorkshire side have shipped. Each of the last three Sheffield Wednesday league games have gone over 2.5 producing a total of 13 goals. Just 8% of their league goals this campaign have come in the final 15 minutes.

Sheffield Wednesday Team News

Ross Wallace (knee), Jack Hunt (hamstring), Jordan Thorniley (concussion) and Joost van Aken (hip) are doubts while Gary Hooper (hip), Kieran Westwood (groin), Steven Fletcher, Sam Hutchinson (both knee), Barry Bannan (groin) and Fernando Forestieri (knee) are all long-term absentees.

Ipswich Town Preview

The Tractor Boys have been a mixed bag of late with two victories, three draws and two defeats from their last seven. They sit in 13th place with just two of their final 12 matches against the top six. Away from Portman Road, they are unbeaten in four with victories at Preston and Sunderland and draws with Norwich and Bolton. They have netted in each of their last five on the road and exactly once on four occasions. Not one of the last eight Ipswich games have gone over 2.5 goals and have combined for a total of just ten goals. Around 67% of the league goals the Suffolk side have netted this season have come in the second-half.

Ipswich Town Team News

Tristan Nydam (fitness) is rated doubtful. Tom Adeyemi, Teddy Bishop (both hamstring), Dean Gerken (hip), Emyr Huws and Andre Dozzell (both knee) are long-term absentees. David McGoldrick (groin) is unlikely to feature again this season
