Sheffield Wednesday vs Cardiff City Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday evening (17:30) game is live on SKYTV and features two sides in opposite halves of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Sheffield Wednesday started life under their new manager Jos Luhukay with a morale boosting goalless draw at Bramall Lane. In midweek, they faced an FA Cup replay with Carlisle that won 2-0 in front of their own fans thanks to a goal each from Marco Matias and Atdhe Nuhiu. Cardiff got themselves back on track in the league with a 4-0 defeat of Sunderland thanks to a brace from Callum Paterson and one each from Joe Ralls and each one from Anthony Pilkington. In midweek, they were involved in an FA Cup replay with Mansfield in a game that ended in a 4-1 road success with a brace from Junior Hoilett and one each from Bruno Ecuele Manga and Anthony Pilkington. The reverse fixture in mid-September from the Cardiff City Stadium in Wales ended in a 1-1 draw. Gary Hooper gave the Owls the lead and they seem set for all three points until Sol Bamba netted in the 95th minute for the Bluebirds.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Bookmakers make Cardiff the favourites here but I would need to see more than a victory over a Sunderland and Mansfield before I am convinced they have turned the corner while Wednesday have just one win 11 so I could not trust them. Both teams have scored over 55% of their goals in the second-half so backing the second 45 minutes to be the highest scoring looks the option here. Yanic Wildschut made a difference coming off the bench against a tired Sunderland last weekend with his pace and he grabbed a few from that role for Norwich earlier in the season so he worth a little interest in the last goalscorer market.

Sheffield Wednesday Preview

The Owls have taken just one point from their last three in the league and one won of their last 11. They have dropped to 17th and are closer to the relegation zone (seven points) than the play-off spots (12 points). At Hillsborough, they are without a victory in their last five with each of their last three ending in defeat. Only four sides have conceded more Championship goals at their own ground this season than the 18 they have shipped. The Yorkshire outfit have failed to net in their last three in the league while just one of their last six has seen both teams score. Wednesday would be as high as eighth if the table was decided on half-time scores as they have gone to the interval behind in just nine of their 27.

Sheffield Wednesday Team News

Glenn Loovens is suspended while Jack Hunt, Gary Hooper (both hip), Kieran Westwood (groin), Steven Fletcher and Sam Hutchinson (both knee) are doubts. Barry Bannan (groin) and Fernando Forestieri (knee) are long-term absentees.

Cardiff City Preview

A run of four straight league defeats came to an end last time for the Bluebirds and they must hope that gets their season back on track. They sit in third place and are just two points behind Derby in second with just one of their next four against a top-half side. Away from the Cardiff City Stadium, they have lost their last two in the Championship but before that had taken seven points from the previous three. The 14 road goals they have conceded puts them in the bottom third ranked attacks but the 15 they have shipped is the joint-fourth best in the division. Five of the last eight Cardiff have played in the league have gone over 2.5 goals though this is just 13 of 27 over the whole season. Just 13 of the 40 goals they have scored this campaign have come in the first-half.

Cardiff City Team News

Craig Bryson (Achilles) and Kadeem Harris (groin) are back in training while Danny Ward (knee), Lee Camp (groin), Aron Gunnarsson (ankle), Lee Peltier (unknown and Matt Connolly (muscle) are doubts.
