Sheffield Wednesday vs Burton Albion Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This New Year’s Day fixture (15:00) features two sides in the bottom-half of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Sheffield Wednesday are still without a manager and they suffered a 2-0 loss to Brentford in their last game. The Bees were the deserved victors in a game that the Owls barely created a goal scoring opportunity. Burton battled out a home draw with Norwich in their last game in a match that finished without a goal. Albion can probably feel a little hard done by not taking all three points as they created the bigger scoring opportunities. The reverse fixture at the Pirelli Stadium came at the end of August and the game ended in a 1-1 draw. Gary Hooper had given Wednesday the lead but Joe Mason levelled things for the Brewers.

Betting Tips and Predictions

I think Burton and the draw double chance looks the way to go here as the visitors have lost just one of their last five on the road and this includes trips to Millwall and Brentford who are above Wednesday. The Owls for their part are managerless and are without a victory in their last four at home. The Brewers are tough to break down on the road and their last nine road fixtures have produced a total of just ten goals so take the under 2.5 goals while for the brave under 1.5 also could be an option.

Sheffield Wednesday Preview

The Owls are still without a manager and Steve McClaren, Gus Poyet and Claudio Ranieri are the latest names in the frame for the vacancy. On the pitch, it is now four defeats in five and just one victory in nine which has seen them slide down to 16th. At Hillsborough, they have lost their last two and won none of their last four with Barnsley, Sunderland, Hull and QPR having taken a point here. Two of their last four and seven of ten in front of their own fans have seen over 2.5 goals. 14 of the 25 Wednesday have played have produced two or three goals and they average 2.44 goals per fixture. 57% of their goals have come in the second-half with 43% in the final 30 minutes.

Sheffield Wednesday Team News

Gary Hooper (unknown), Steven Fletcher (knee), Barry Bannan and Kieran Westwood (both groin) are doubts. Tom Lees (thigh), Kieran Lee (hip), Fernando Forestieri (knee) and George Boyd (shoulder) are long-term absentees.

Burton Albion Preview

It has been a mixed bag for the Brewers lately with two victories, one draw and two defeats from their last five. They sit in 23rd place and will also be concerned about whether they can hold on to boss Nigel Clough now that Forest have a vacancy. Away from the Pirelli Stadium, they have won their last two and lost just one of their last five which suggests the system is better set up for road success. Their last nine league away fixtures have produced a total of just ten goals. With just 17 goals for the season Burton are the lowest scorers in the division with Birmingham on 13 the only team lower. They also share the joint worst defence record having shipped 43 times though they have kept six clean-sheets with five of them coming on the road.

Burton Albion Team News

Liam Boyce (cruciate) is a long-term absentee while Joe Mason (appendix) and Matty Lund (illness) are doubts.
