Sheffield Wednesday vs Birmingham City Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture is between two sides in the bottom-half of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Sheffield Wednesday drew their last game 0-0 with Middlesbrough at the Riverside in midweek. The Owls can consider themselves a little lucky as they were dominated by the Teesiders in the expected goals data.

Birmingham picked up an important three points in midweek as they defeated Sunderland 3-1 at St Andrew’s. The goals were shared around the team with one each for David Davis, Jeremie Boga and Sam Gallagher.

The reverse fixture came at the end of September and the Blues won that 1-0 thanks to an Isaac Vassell goal. It continued a trend that has seen the home team win each of the last three and four of the last five head-to-heads.

Betting Tips and Predictions

I am going to take a chance on Birmingham with the draw no bet here. They have picked up of late and have won at Reading and drawn at Huddersfield (in the cup), Sheffield United and Preston in recent times on the road.

Sam Gallagher is in form for the visitors with two in two and six in seven and despite the Owls recent clean sheets he looks overpriced to score at any time here.

Sheffield Wednesday Preview

The Owls are on a run of three straight goalless draws in the Championship and five without a victory. At the transfer deadline, it was a quiet time for Wednesday with no major comings or goings.

At Hillsborough, they have failed to win any of their last six and scored a total of just three goals in this period. 18 of the 30 goals the Yorkshire side have scored this season have come at their own ground.

Gary Hooper has ten league goals but no other Sheffield Wednesday player has scored more than four this season. Only 25% of their league goals this campaign have come in the opening 30 minutes.

Sheffield Wednesday Team News

Gary Hooper (hip), Kieran Westwood (groin), Steven Fletcher, Sam Hutchinson (both knee), Joost van Aken and Tom Lees (both unknown) are doubts. Barry Bannan (groin) and Fernando Forestieri (knee) are long-term absentees.

Birmingham City Preview

Ten points from their last five fixtures has moved the Blues out of the bottom three and into 20th. It was a quiet deadline for the second city outfit as they failed to bring in a player missing out on main loan target Kasey Palmer who joined Derby.

Away from St Andrew’s, they are unbeaten in three and have lost just one of their last five which came at Fulham. They have found the back of the net in all but one of their last five road trips.

Sam Gallagher is in good scoring form having netted six times in his last seven appearances in all competitions. Only 16% of the goals Birmingham have scored in the league this season have come in the 15 minutes after the start or after the interval.

Birmingham City Team News

Tomas Kuszczak (groin) is a doubt while Isaac Vassell (cruciate) is expected to miss the remainder of the season.
