Sheffield Wednesday vs Birmingham City Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This New Year’s Day fixture (kick-off 15:00) features the side in seventh away to the team in 16th place. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Sheffield Wednesday stretched their unbeaten run to three under caretaker Lee Bullen with a 1-1 draw at West Brom last time out. The Owls were actually the better side and an Atdhe Nuhiu goal looked like giving them all three points before conceding late.

Birmingham stretched their unbeaten run to four through they were held to a goalless home draw with Brantford last time out. It was a flat performance for the Blues who barely created anything.

The reverse fixture came on October 27th at St Andrew’s, and the Blues won 3-1 through the scoreline flattered them. Steven Fletcher had put the Owls ahead before Connor Mahoney, Che Adams and Lukas Jutkiewicz all bagged one each for City.

Betting Tips and Predictions

If Adam Reach is fit then Sheffield Wednesday look over-priced here as despite the league positions I don’t think there is much between these sides so home advantage means Wednesday should be favourites. I would wait for team news through as Reach is a crucial player.

Birmingham have kept three straight clean-sheets, the Owls have shipped just one goal in the last three so this one could be tight. I’m taking No in the both teams to score market and also under 1.5 goals.

Sheffield Wednesday Preview

The Owls have taken seven points from their three fixtures under Lee Bullen  and this has eased their relegation worries as they sit 16th. The club do not have a lot of money to spend in January but a few new faces are needed to freshen up their ageing side.

At Hillsborough, the Yorkshire outfit have two wins and a draw from their last three through all three opponents were in the bottom eight. They have played five top eight sides at their own place this season and lost three drawing two.

None of the last three Sheffield Wednesday games have gone over 2.5 goals and produced a combined four goals. Just one of their last three has seen both teams score with Wednesday keeping clean sheets in two of their last three.

Sheffield Wednesday Team News

Adam Reach and Lucas Joao (both unknown) are doubts while Fernando Forestieri (foot) is a few weeks from a return. Sam Winnall (hamstring), Kieran Lee (knee) and Gary Hooper (groin) are long-term absentees.

Birmingham City Preview

The Blues are unbeaten in four and have lost just one of their last seven a run that has put them into seventh four points off sixth. In the transfer window they should look to find some creativity as their current midfield is solid if unspectacular.

Away from St Andrew’s, the Midlands unit have gone three unbeaten winning two of these and drawing the other. They have bagged an impressive nine times on the road from their last four with Che Adams grabbing two in two and Michael Morrison two in three.

None of the last three and just one of the last seven Birmingham have played in the league have seen both teams net. Three of their last five and four of their last seven have gone under 2.5 goals.

Birmingham City Team News

Isaac Vassell (hip) and David Davis (ankle) have returned to training and are closing in on returns while Kristian Pedersen (ankle) is a doubt. Marc Roberts (calf) is set to miss the next few weeks.
