Sheffield Wednesday vs Aston Villa Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides in opposite halves of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Sheffield Wednesday suffered a disappointment in midweek going down 2-1 on the road to Millwall. Joey Pelupessy had given them the lead just before half-time but the Lions roared back to take all three points. Aston Villa continued their frustrating week as they were held to a home draw with Preston on Tuesday night. They needed a Lewis Grabban 66th minute to enable them to get a point against their promotion rivals. The reverse fixture came early in November in the Midlands and Wednesday picked up a 2-1 victory on that occasion. Adam Reach and Jordan Rhodes gave them a two-goal lead in 23 minutes and a late Chris Samba effort was just a consolation for Villa.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Aston Villa are missing key creative talent Jack Grealish who this side is built around so team news on him is crucial. Even if he does return though I still think Wednesday in the draw no bet market look worth an interest as Villa have shown this season they can slump from a good run to a bad run quite quickly. Ross Wallace played up front for the Owls in midweek and if he starts here again then the prices on him to score look wrong. Take an each-way interest on him to be the first goalscorer.

Sheffield Wednesday Preview

The Owls have won just one of their last seven in the league though four of these ended in a draw. This marks the start of a difficult run of games with five of their next six against teams currently in the top 14. At Hillsborough, victory over Derby put to an end a run of seven in front of their own fans without a victory. They have shipped eight goals in their last five league games at their own ground. Seven of the last ten Sheffield Wednesday league fixtures have seen both teams find the back of the net. The Yorkshire outfit would be as high as tenth if the league was settled on the scores after 45 minutes.

Sheffield Wednesday Team News

Jordan Rhodes (illness), Tom Lees (groin) and Joost van Aken (hip) are doubts while Gary Hooper (hip), Kieran Westwood (groin), Steven Fletcher, Sam Hutchinson (both knee), Barry Bannan (groin) and Fernando Forestieri (knee) are all long-term absentees.

Aston Villa Preview

After a run of seven straight Championship victories they have now taken just one point from their last two. Each of their next three and six of their next seven are against teams in the bottom-half. Away from Villa Park, they have three victories and one defeat from their last four. These games have all ended to nil with the three the Midlands side won finishing 1-0 and the one they lost ending 2-0. Aston Villa are one of the few sides in the division who have scored more goals in the first-half (26) than in the second (23). On just five occasions have they found themselves behind going into the interval.

Aston Villa Team News

Jack Grealish (calf), Albert Adomah, Chris Samba, Andre Green (all hamstring), Gabby Agbonlahor and Jordan Lyden (both ankle) are doubts while Jonathan Kodjia (also ankle) and Jed Steer (dislocated shoulder) are long-term absentees.
