Sheffield United vs Sheffield Wednesday Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Friday evening (19:45) Championship fixture is live on SKYTV and it should be a feisty one as it is a Steel City derby. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Sheffield United come into this game in reasonable form having won 1-0 at Ipswich in the FA Cup Third Round thanks to a Nathan Thomas goal. They also picked up a useful point away at Derby in their last league game as Leon Clarke netted in a 1-1 draw. Sheffield Wednesday will be hoping for a new manager bounce as they are enduring a poor run of form. They were held goalless at Carlisle in the FA Cup while last time out in the league they suffered a 3-0 home loss to struggling Burton. The reverse fixture between these local rivals came in September and the Blades won an entertaining six-goal game 4-2. Leon Clarke netted two that day while John Fleck and Mark Duffy grabbed one each with Gary Hooper and Lucas Joao scoring for the Owls.

Betting Tips and Predictions

United are the favourites to win the game but given they have won just one of five at home under evens on them looks a little short. If I was to lean one way in the match markets it might be towards the draw and the visitors but I prefer to look to other markets. Given the Blades are keeping things tighter with just four goals in total in their last three and the Owls are under a new manager and this is a local derby this might be different to the six-goal thriller last time they met. I think backing NO goal to be scored before 31:00 and the match to be goalless at half-time looks the way to play this.

Sheffield United Preview

It is now just one defeat from their last five in all competitions for the Blades who will be hoping that they are over their poor run of form that saw them take just one point from the five prior to that. They are in seventh place just outside the play-offs one point and one place behind Leeds.

At Bramall Lane, they lost their last game to Bolton and have taken just four points from their last five in front of their own fans. Their home defence has been an issue keeping just one clean sheet in their last seven and shipping nine in their last five.

Overall though they are defending better of late with just two goals conceded in their last four. This is reflective of a general pattern with Sheffield United as their matches have become tighter with their last three in all competitions producing just four goals.

Sheffield United Team News

Ched Evans (ankle) and David Brooks (virus) are doubts while Kieron Freeman (dislocated kneecap) is out for a few more weeks. Paul Coutts (broken leg) is out for the season.

Sheffield Wednesday Preview

This will be the first league game in charge for new boss Jos Luhukay who has extensive experience in Germany and is known as a promotion specialist. He inherits a Wednesday side 16th in the league and who are closer to the bottom three than the top six.

Away from Hillsborough, results have been mixed lately with two victories, three draws and two defeats from their last seven. They have netted just four times in their last five on their travels and three of these came in the same fixture.

The last four league matches have produced a total of two or three goals while their season average is 2.46 per fixture. Gary Hooper has scored ten league goals this season which is a third of the Wednesday goals.

Sheffield Wednesday Team News

Jack Hunt, Gary Hooper (both hip), Kieran Westwood (groin), Steven Fletcher and Sam Hutchinson (both knee) are doubts while Barry Bannan (groin) is out for a few months.
