Sheffield United vs Middlesbrough Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Tuesday evening (19:45) fixture is an important one in the race to make the end of season Championship play-offs.  Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Sheffield United suffered disappointment last time out going down to a 3-2 defeat to local rivals Barnsley.  John Fleck and Leon Clarke put them 2-1 ahead with 25 minutes but they conceded two in the last 16 minutes to go home pointless.

Middlesbrough put their three-game winless run behind them with a 2-0 home victory over Nottingham Forest.  Daniel Ayala and Stuart Downing got them two ahead after 31 minutes and that was the end of the scoring.

The reverse fixture came in August and the Teesiders won that 1-0 thanks to a Rudy Gestede goal.  It means Boro have won their last three head-to-heads and are unbeaten in the previous eight meetings.

Betting Tips and Predictions

The draw makes the most appeal here given that Sheffield United have drawn their last two at home and Middlesbrough have drawn three of their last four on the road.  In addition, given that both teams have good players going forward backing the draw to be a score draw also makes sense.

Sheffield United Preview

The Blades are now without a victory in their last four though three of these have ended in a draw.  They are still in touching distance of the play-offs sitting in ninth place four behind their opponents here who are sixth.

At Bramall Lane, they are unbeaten in their last five in the league though the last two have ended in draws.  These fixtures tend to be low-scoring with four of their last eight in front of their own fans going under 1.5 goals.

Leon Clarke has 17 Championship goals for the season and has bagged in each of his last two appearances.  Six of their last seven head-to-heads with Middlesbrough have gone under 1.5 goals.

Sheffield United Team News

Paul Coutts (broken leg) is out for the season while Jamal Blackman is suspended. Lee Evans (unknown) and Richard Stearman (hamstring) are doubts.

Middlesbrough Preview

Boro have lost just one of their last nine in the league a run that has allowed to keep a hold of their sixth-place spot.  They are two points behind Derby in fifth and just one point ahead of Millwall in seventh.

Away from the Riverside Stadium, they are unbeaten in their last four though three of these have ended drawn.  Just one of their last six league fixtures on the road have gone over 2.5 goals.

Eight of the last 12 goals that Middlesbrough have scored in the league have come in the first-half.  The average time for the first goal scored by the Teesiders and the first goal conceded are both 38 minutes.

Middlesbrough Team News

Rudy Gestede (broken ankle) is unlikely to play again this season.
