Scunthorpe United vs Rotherham United Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday lunchtime (12:30) fixture is a first-leg semi-final of the League One promotion play-offs.  Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Scunthorpe ended the season by stretching their unbeaten run to eight games as they drew 1-1 at home to Bradford.  The result means that they finished the league season in fifth place and are at home in the opening leg.

Rotherham ended their campaign with a 1-0 home victory over Blackpool their third in their last four.  Will Vaulks got the goal (his second in his last four) to secure their fourth-place finish.

The previous meeting at Glanford Park came in February and the Millers won that encounter 2-1.  That means they have done the double over the Irons this season having beaten them 2-0 at their own ground in October.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Given that these two sides were separated by just five points I am surprised to see Scunthorpe not outsiders but as big outsiders to go through here.  I make the chances closer to fifty-fifty especially given the way that both ended the season. As I see little between the sides the prices dictate backing the Irons to qualify.

The Millers have lost four of their last seven on the road and ten of 23 this season I think a home victory also looks the call.

Scunthorpe United Preview

The Irons sacked Graham Alexander in mid-March despite still being in the play-offs because they were on a run of seven without a victory.  Nick Daws stepped in as caretaker going unbeaten in his six in charge including victories in four of these.

At Glanford Park, they have struggled a little winning just nine of their 23 though eight of these ended all-square.  They have won two of their last three at their own ground though before that were on a seven-match winless run.

Scunthorpe ended the season in fifth which is also where their attack was ranked while the defence was fourth best.  58% of the goals that they netted in the league this season came in the second-half.

They have no new injury worries or suspensions ahead of this fixture

Rotherham United Preview

The Millers will attempt to bounce back to the Championship at the first time of asking following relegation last season.  Paul Warne was a reluctant manager but he has done a good job establishing them in the top six for most of the season.

Away from the New York Stadium, they have struggled a little losing ten times this season which gives them a bottom-half road record.  They have lost four of their last seven on the road winning just two of these.

56% of the goals Rotherham have scored this season have come in the second-half with 30% in the final 15 minutes.  Following the sale of Kieffer Moore in January the topscorer is now David Ball though he has just one in his last 16.

Rotherham United Team News

Joe Newell (groin) is a doubt while Darren Potter and Jamie Proctor (both unknown) are long-term injury victims.
