Scotland vs Slovakia Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Scotland will look to continue their charge for a place in the World Cup play-offs when they welcome Slovakia at the Hampden Park on Thursday night. Scotland only managed a 2-0 home victory over the minnows Malta a month ago thanks to goals from Christophe Berra and Leigh Griffiths. On the other hand, Slovakia threw away a one-goal lead following Stanislav Lobotka’s early goal to succumb to a 2-1 defeat on the road at England last time out. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news, match stats and odds all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Scotland should feel confident ahead of this tie as they have only lost two of their last 15 home games across all competitions, and are currently on a seven-game unbeaten streak. On the other hand, Slovakia have only won three of their last ten away games across all competitions. I’m backing both teams to get on the scoresheet here, but I think that the game will end as a draw.

Scotland Preview

After two heavy consecutive 3-0 defeats at the hands of Slovakia and England a year ago, Scotland managed to put their World Cup qualifying campaign back on track. The Scots have won three and draw one of their last four qualifiers, scoring at least two goals in three of these. This lifts Scotland in 4th position in the group F table tied on 14 points with the 3rd-placed Slovenia, just one point behind the second-placed and their Thursday’s opponents Slovakia. Gordon Strachan’s men looked solid at the back over the past seven months, keeping a clean sheet in three of their last four World Cup qualifying games. Furthermore, Scotland can count on their home form over the past twelve months, winning three and drawing four of their last seven home fixtures across all competitions. The bad news is that the Tartan Army have suffered a 3-0 defeat against Slovakia in the reverse fixture of this WC qualifying campaign. Celtic’s prolific striker Leigh Griffiths has been Scotland’s most dangerous player in front of goal throughout this campaign, helping the team with three goals and three assists in his seven appearances. Robert Snodgrass has also scored a hat-trick in Scotland’s 1-5 victory over Malta a year ago, but he has failed to score another goal since then.

Scotland Team News

Scott Brown and Stuart Armstrong are both missing through injury, but Callum McGregor has been called up to the squad for this last two World Cup qualifiers.

Slovakia Preview

Meanwhile, Slovakia’s three-game winning streak in this World Cup qualifying campaign ended last month as they suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat on the road at England, despite the fact they had an early lead. They still sit in second spot in the group F table, but they are now just one point clear of both Slovenia and Scotland. The Slovaks have collected 15 points from their opening eight group fixtures thanks to a record of five victories and three defeats. Jan Kozak’s men looked decent going forward throughout this qualifying campaign, scoring 14 goals in eight rounds. Adam Nemec and Marek Hamsik have been Slovakia’s most prolific players in front of goal throughout this qualification campaign, as the pair bagged five goals and six assists between them. Away from home, the Slovaks have only won two of their last eight games across all competitions and the most worrying fact is that they have failed to score in four of these. The good news is that Slovakia have won two of their last three qualifiers, scoring at least two goals in each of these. Slovakia have struggled to keep the ball out of their own on the road over the past year, keeping just one clean sheet in their last ten away games across all competitions.

Slovakia Team News

There are no fresh injury concerns for Slovakia ahead of this trip.
