Rotherham United vs Scunthorpe United Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Wednesday evening (19:45) fixture is a second-leg semi-final of the League One promotion play-offs.  Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

It is honours even after an entertaining first-leg that finished in a 2-2 draw at Glanford Park on Saturday.  The Millers twice took the lead (first through Jon Taylor and then Joe Newell) before being pegged back through an own-goal and then two minutes from time Cameron McGeehan netted a crucial equalizer.

These two sides met at the New York Stadium during the regular season which came in October and the hosts won that day 2-0.  Will Vaulks and the now departed Kieffer Moore getting the goals.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Bookmakers make Rotherham favourites because of their strong form home over the season where they have beaten many sides this campaign including Scunthorpe.    I cannot argue with the prices though I would not be rushing to back them.

I like the look of a couple of players to score at any time in this fixture.  The first of which is Ivan Toney who has six in his last eight on the road for the Irons.  The second is Joe Newell who came off the bench to score for the Millers in midweek and I think will get the nod to start here.

Rotherham United Preview

At the New York Stadium, the Yorkshire outfit have alongside Blackburn won the joint-highest amount of divisional home ties (15).  They have won each of their last three and eight of their last ten here.

Only Blackburn (46) have scored more goals in front of their own fans in League One this season than the 45 the Millers have bagged.  They have also been strong at the back with the fifth best home defensive record.

Four of the last seven matches played at Rotherham have seen both teams manage to find the back of the net.  Ten of their 23 at their own ground have been level going into the interval.

Rotherham United Team News

Darren Potter and Jamie Proctor (both unknown) are long-term injury victims.

Scunthorpe United Preview

Away from Glanford Park, the Irons have been strong this season and are among a quartet of sides to top the table with just four defeats.  They have lost none of their last eight on the road though six of these have ended in draws.

The 37 road goals that Scunthorpe have scored this season is the second best in the division while the 27 they have shipped gives them the joint-fifth best away from home defensive record.

In just six of their 23 league matches on their travels have the Irons found themselves behind going into the interval.  Ivan Toney has had success on the road bagging six times in his last eight.

Scunthorpe United Team News

Keeper Matty Gilks is a concern after going injured in the first-leg with a knock.
