Rosenborg vs Ajax Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Last season’s Europa League finalists Ajax will be looking to avoid a humiliating elimination from the competition when they travel to the Lerkendal Stadion to take on Rosenborg on Thursday night for the second leg of their Europa League play-off tie. Ajax created themselves over 20 goalscoring opportunities, including eight shots on target last week, but they were unable to find the back of the net. Rosenborg found the back of the net late in the game despite only having two shots on target, with Samuel Adegbenro scoring the winner in the 77th minute. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Rosenborg haven’t been very convincing at home over the past few weeks. They needed a goal in extra-time to beat Dundalk in their Champions League qualifiers and then lost to Celtic. Furthermore, they were beaten by Haugesund in the Eliteserien at the weekend, so I think that Ajax have a good chance of winning here. The Amsterdammers looked in control in the first leg, but unfortunately, they weren’t able to find the back of the net. I’m expecting a high-scoring game here as Ajax have nothing to lose and they are obliged to score.

Rosenborg Preview

Although they suffered a disappointing elimination from the Champions League third qualifying round following a narrow 1-0 aggregate defeat at the hands of Celtic, Rosenborg bounced back with four consecutive wins across all competitions. Their winning streak ended at the weekend as they suffered an unexpected 0-1 home loss at the hands of Haugesund in the Eliteserien. However, manager Kare Ingebrigtsen rested several key players against Haugesund as their main goal at the moment is to reach the Europa League group stage. Despite the defeat, Rosenborg still sit comfortably at the top of the Eliteserien table with 41 points under their belts after 20 rounds, six points clear of second-placed Sarpsborg 08. On home soil, Rosenborg have endured a mixed run of form over the past three months, registering five wins, two defeats and one draw in their last eight home fixtures across all competitions. However, their recent Europa League home run has been terrible as they are winless in the last five home games, scoring just two goals in this term. Overall, Rosenborg were on a nine-game winless streak prior to their 0-1 win at Ajax last week.

Rosenborg Team News

Andreas Helmersen and Pal Andre Helland are both doubts, while Magnus Stamnestro is back in training following his knee injury.

Ajax Preview

Ajax failed to find the back of the net against Rosenborg last week, but they looked much better at the weekend as they beat Groningen 3-1 at home in the second round of the new Eredivisie campaign. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored his first goal for Ajax since his return, while Hakim Ziyech continued his recent goalscoring form as he has already scored three goals in this early part of the 2017/18 competitive season. The Amsterdammers managed to reach the Europa League final last season where they were beaten by Manchester United, but they are now in real danger of exiting the competition before the group stage. The most worrying fact is that Ajax have struggled for form on the road in the Europa League over the past few years, winning just two of their last nine games. They are currently winless in six Europa League away fixtures, conceding at least two goals in four of these. Actually, conceding has been their main issue over the past three months, as they allowed at least two goals in five of their last eight games across all competitions. Donny van de Beek scored two goals in Ajax’s two-legged tie against Nice in the Champions League, and he is their current top scorer in Europe.

Ajax Team News

Indy Groothuizen, Abdelhak Nouri, Amin Younes, Mateusz Gorski and Norbert Alblas are all doubts ahead of this trip.
