Roma vs Atletico Madrid Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Roma and Atletico Madrid will square off at the Stadio Olimpico on Tuesday night, September 12, for the opening fixture of their Champions League group C. Roma have had a mixed start to the new Serie A campaign and still have a difficult trip to Sampdoria at the weekend before taking on Atletico Madrid on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Spaniards have already managed to collect a couple of points in the early part of their La Liga season, but similar to Roma, they also have a difficult trip to Valencia at the weekend. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Roma are slight favourites to win here due to the fact they are playing in front of their own fans. However, Atletico Madrid looked much better in this early part of this new competitive season, so I think they should be able to secure at least a draw in this one. Although that Atletico Madrid are well-known for their defensive approach, I’m fancying goals in this one as both sides have been involved in high-scoring affairs so far this season.

Roma Preview

Roma have endured a shaky start domestically, but it was somehow expected after their terrible summer transfer campaign. They have sold some of last season’s best players in the shape of Leandro Paredes, Antonio Rudiger and Mohamed Salah, while they brought in a couple of youngsters in the shape of Rick Karsdorp, Cengiz Under, Bruno Peres, Lorenzo Pellegrini and Mario Rui. Roma used to be a strong side on home soil last season, but their recent home form over the past five months has seen them win just four of their last nine games across all competitions. Regarding their Champions League recent record, the Giallorossi are back in the competition after a season away, but they looked terrible in their most recent outings. They are winless in six Champions League fixtures, but the most worrying fact is that they have only scored twice in the process. Roma lost 1-4 on aggregate at the hands of FC Porto in the last season’s  play-offs and only reached the Europa League round of 16, losing 5-4 over two games against Lyon. At home, the Giallorossi have only won once in their last seven Champions League games, having failed to score in four of these. Actually, Roma  have  only won one of their last 15 games in the Champions League, which was a 3-2 home triumph over Bayer Leverkusen back in November 2015.

Roma Team News

Luca Pellegrini is still out through injury, while Emerson is a doubt.

Atletico Madrid Preview

Atletico Madrid, on the other hand, have had a much better start to their domestic campaign, despite the fact they have a difficult trip to Valencia at the weekend, they still have enough chances to extend their unbeaten run to 13 games across all competitions. Atletico Madrid have enjoyed a great run of form in the Champions League over the past few years. Last year, they only missed out on becoming the 7th side to win all six games in a Champions League group when they lost 1-0 at the hands of Bayern Munich in their final group fixture. Simeone’s men reached the Semi-finals last season, but suffered a 4-2 aggregate loss at the hands of their city rivals Real Madrid, despite winning 2-1 in the second leg at the Vicente Calderon. The bad news is that los Colchoneros have struggled for consistency on the road in the Champions League recently, having won just once in their last four away games. The good news is that Atletico won two of their three away games in last year’s group stage. In addition, Atletico are undefeated in the last three visits to Italy, including a nil-nil draw against the Italian giants Juventus in their most recent trip back in 2014/15.

Atletico Madrid Team News

Bernabe Barragan is the only doubtful player for Atletico ahead of this trip.
