Real Madrid vs Manchester United Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

The Champions League champions Real Madrid will face the Europa League winners Manchester United at the Nacionalna Arena Filip II Makedonski in Skopje on Tuesday night, with both sides looking for their first silverware of the 2017/18 season. Real Madrid enter the fray on the back of a penalty-shootout victory over MLS All-Stars in a friendly game a few days ago after Borja Mayoral scoring Los Blancos’ only goal in the regular time. Meanwhile, Manchester United beat Sampdoria 2-1 in a friendly fixture last week thanks to goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Juan Mata. These two sides met in the International Champions Cup in a friendly match last month, with Manchester United winning at penalties. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Real Madrid will be looking to add another piece of history to their club as no side have won consecutive UEFA Super Cups since AC Milan in 1989 and 1990. On the flip side, Manchester United could claim their second European Super Cup and stop the Spanish dominance, as the Spanish sides have won seven of the last eight Super Cups. I’m finding great value for both teams to score here, as United have netted plenty of goals in pre-season while Real Madrid have conceded at least once in each of their last five friendlies. On the flip side, Real Madrid have scored at least once in each of their games over the past year and a half, so they should be able to find the back of the net here as well. In addition, the previous seven meetings between these two teams have seen goals at both ends of the field.

Real Madrid Preview

Real Madrid have endured a mixed run of form in pre-season, winning just once in regular time in their five friendlies. Their back line looked a bit sloppy during this run of form, as they have conceded at least once in each of their five games. They looked sharp until the guidance of Zinedine Zidane over the past one year and a half and became the first side in the modern era to defend the Champions League title last term, beating Juventus 4-1 in the final. The interesting fact is that Real Madrid’s involvement in the transfer market has been much lower than in the previous years, as they only brought in Theo Hernandez from Atletico Madrid and Dani Ceballos from Real Betis for a total fee of €47m. Furthermore, they have sold Alvaro Morata to Chelsea for €65m, Danilo to Manchester City for €30m and Mariano Diaz for Lyon for €8m, with the latter already scoring two goals in the first round of the new French Ligue 1 season. Los Blancos have been heavily linked with Monaco’s wonderkid Kylian Mbappe over the past month, but there are no fresh news regarding a potential move. Despite this low activity in the transfer market, Madrid still have the likes of Isco, Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale, Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and of course their main man, Cristiano Ronaldo. Head-to-head, Real Madrid have only won once in the last five meetings with Manchester United across all competitions, and have conceded at least two goals in three of these.

Real Madrid Team News

Cristiano Ronaldo has only returned to training at the weekend and it remains to be seen if he will be able to face his former team on Tuesday.

Manchester United Preview

On the flip side, Jose Mourinho has definitely strengthened his Manchester United squad throughout this transfer window with the additions of Romelu Lukaku from Everton for €84.7m, Nemanja Matic from Chelsea for €44.7m and Victor Lindelof from Benfica for €35m. In terms of departures, United sold Adnan Januzaj to Real Sociedad for €8.5m and allowed Wayne Rooney to move on a free transfer to Everton. Manchester United have played seven friendlies since winning the Europa League trophy in May following a 0-2 win over Ajax in the final. They have won six of their seven friendly fixtures, scoring at least two goals in five of these. Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Romelu Lukaku have both impressed throughout pre-season, bagging five goals between them. They should have enough goalscoring opportunities in this one due to the fact that Real Madrid have had problems at the back throughout their pre-season campaign. This is only the 4th Super Cup that the Red Devils will have partaken in and they lost their last appearance in the competition as they were beaten by Zenit St. Petersburg back in 2008. Furthermore, no English side have won the UEFA Super Cup since Liverpool’s triumph in 2005. This is a great opportunity for Manchester United to prove they are ready again to compete against the Europe’s biggest clubs and they can also count on their away record over the past few months which has seen them lose just four of their last 20 games across all competitions.

Manchester United Team News

Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo and Ashley Young are still missing through injury, while Sergio Romero and Jesse Lingard haven’t traveled to Dublin for United’s game against Sampdoria, so it remains to be seen if they will feature in this clash.
