Real Madrid vs APOEL Nicosia Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Real Madrid will be looking to get back to winning ways when they welcome APOEL Nicosia at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night for the opening game of their Champions League group H campaign. Real Madrid needed to come back from one-goal down to secure a disappointing 1-1 home draw against Levante in La Liga at the weekend, with Lucas Vazquez scoring the equaliser just after the half-hour mark. On the other hand, APOEL Nicosia picked up a comfortable 1-4 victory on the road at Nea Salamis in the Cyprus First Division on Saturday thanks to a brace from Igor de Camargo and two other goals from Roland Sallai and Mickael Pote. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Real Madrid are undefeated in 15 home games in the Champions League and have scored at least two goals in ten of these. Despite the fact they have struggled for consistency recently, they still should be able to secure a comfortable victory over APOEL, who have only won one of their last seven away games in the Champions League. Real Madrid to win and to score at least four goals in this clash look good value for money, so I’m expecting a goal fest here. Cristiano Ronaldo and Marco Asensio have both been in fine shape in this early part of the season and they should be able to find the back of the net at least once in this one. Here are our best two predictions for this game:

Asian Handicap -3 on Real Madrid at 6/10

Over 4.5 goals at 21/20

Real Madrid scored over 1.5 goals in 8 out of their last 10 games played

Real Madrid are undefeated in all of their last 3 games against APOEL Nicosia

APOEL Nicosia saw over 1.5 goals in 3 out of their last 3 games played against Real Madrid

Real Madrid Preview

Real Madrid made history in the Champions League last season as they became the first side in the modern era to defend their title in the competition. Los Blancos beat Juventus 4-1 in the final and they are now looking to become the first team since Bayern Munich in 1976 to claim three successive European Champion Clubs’Cups. Real Madrid have already won a piece of silverware this season as they won the Spanish Super Cup following a 5-1 aggregate victory over Barcelona in the middle of August. Real Madrid kicked off their LaLiga campaign with a comfortable 0-3 win at Deportivo La Coruna, but only managed two consecutive draws against Valencia and Levante in their most recent league games. This leaves Real Madrid in 7th spot in the LaLiga table tied on five points with their city rivals Atletico Madrid, already four points behind the current leaders Barcelona. Regarding their Champions League record, Real Madrid have never failed to progress from the initial group stage in their previous 21 participations in the competition. Last year, Los Blancos finished as runner-ups to Borussia Dortmund in their group, which was for the first time since 2012/13 they had failed to top their group. At home, Real Madrid are unbeaten in 15 home games in the Champions League since a 3-4 loss against Schalke 04 back in March 2015.

Real Madrid Team News

Raphael Varane is still out through injury, while Jesus Vallejo is a doubt.

APOEL Nicosia Preview

On the other hand, APOEL Nicosia have won their fifth consecutive Cypriot First Division title last season, but they needed to play three qualifying ties in order to reach the Champions League group stage. They beat the likes of Dudelange, FC Viitorul and Slavia Prague in the qualifying phase this season, having conceded just once in the process. The Cypriots have missed out on the Champions League group stages in the previous two season, but this is their fourth appearance in this stage of the competition. Their best performance in the competition has been in 2014/15 when they went all the way from second qualifying round to quarter-finals. APOEL head into this tie high on confidence following their 4-1 victory over Nea salamis at the weekend in the opening round of their Cypriot First Division. Away from home, APOEL have only lost once in their last 13 games across all competitions, which came at the hands of Viitorul in this year’s Champions League third qualifying round. Their Champions League away record over the past two years has been poor as they have only won once in their last seven trips, having scored just two goals in the process.

APOEL Nicosia Team News

Nicholas Ioannou is missing through injury.
