Reading vs Stoke City Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides who have just one defeat between them from their combined last eight. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Reading saw their three-game unbeaten run come to an end in midweek but there was no disgrace in going down 1-0 to Leeds at Elland Road. A Stuart Dallas goal on the hour marked proved to be the difference between the two sides.

Stoke are six without defeat following a 2-1 defeat over Derby in midweek which came despite having Peter Etebo dismissed in the 33rd minute. The expected goals data actually suggests it was the Rams who were the stronger team but the Potters took their chances to continue their climb up the table.

The last time these sides met was back in the 2012/13 Premier League season so it is hard to read too much into their head-to-head record. For what it is worth Stoke have won just one of their last eight against the Royals.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Despite their improved form I could not be backing Stoke at such short odds which suggests they are one of the elite in the division when in fact they are 12th. Reading would tempt me if it was not for this extensive injury crisis which means the squad is not able to rotate and they will have to use the same players who put in a tough shift away at Leeds during the week.

The best bet then is to back the second 45 minutes to be the highest scoring half to take advantage of those tired legs while adding it to be the highest scoring half for Stoke.

Second-half to be the highest scoring 45 minutes

Stoke to score more goals in the second-half

Reading Preview

The Royals have been a mixed bag of late with one victory, two draws and a defeat from their last four. They sit in 20th place and will hope to climb on the back of three of their next four being at home.

At the Madejski Stadium, they are unbeaten in three and have taken ten points from the last 15 on offer. Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals would have paid in each of their last three in front of their own fans.

2.84 goals per fixture means Reading are one of the more entertaining sides for neutrals to watch with the Berkshire outfit responsible for 1.26 of these. Yakou Meite is in good form having netted six in the last seven.

Reading Team News

The Royals have an extensive injury list with Paul McShane, Omar Richards (both hamstring), Mo Barrow (illness), Sam Baldock (unknown), Adrian Popa, Vito Mannone, (both ankle) all doubts while Dave Edwards (medial collateral ligament), Jordan Obita (cruciate), Jon Dadhi Bodvarsson (back) and Saeid Ezzatolahi (thigh) are long-term absentees.

Stoke City Preview

The Potters are being rewarded for the patience shown to Gary Rowett as they have now gone six unbeaten and lost just one of ten. They are up to 12th in the Championship table and face just one top ten side in their next four.

Away from the Bet365 Stadium, they are six games unbeaten with four of these ending in a draw. The Staffordshire outfit are involved in low-scoring matches on the road with a total of just four netted at both ends in their last four.

2.42 goals per fixture is the average for Stoke with City being responsible for 1.21 of these goals. Benik Afobe and Tom Ince are their leading scorers this season in the league with four goals each.

Stoke City Team News

Ibrahim Afellay (knee) is a doubt while Peter Etebo is suspended for one game following his dismissal in midweek.
