Reading vs Sheffield Wednesday Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features the last two last two sides to lose a Championship play-off final at Wembley. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Reading picked up a point on the road last time out as they battled out a 2-2 draw with an in-form Bolton. They were two down after just 23 minutes and the game seemed headed for a home victory but a Liam Moore goal 14 minutes from time and a Leandro Bacuna penalty seven minutes later secured a point. Sheffield Wednesday also fought back from behind late to secure a useful road point as they drew 2-2 at Ipswich. They had fought back previously to get in the game through Gary Hooper only to fall behind again in the 70th minute but into the 94th minute Atdhe Nuhiu rescued a point. The two meetings between these sides last season ended in victories for the Royals who won 2-1 at the Madejski and 2-0 at Hillsborough. Roy Beerens grabbed a brace in this corresponding fixture last season.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Given that Wednesday have taken four points from their last two road trips to Villa and Ipswich I was interested in getting with them here but the prices don’t really scream value match bet so I will look elsewhere to find value. The Royals tend to start games badly and have been behind at half-time in four of their last six while the Owls have scored five of their last seven in the opening 45 minutes so take the visitors to be in front at the break. Both sides have seen three of their last four go over 2.5 goals and as this is the outsider of the two markets I think it looks worth a small interest.

Reading Preview

A draw last time out means it is just one defeat in the last four the Royals though they are still in the bottom six. Three of their next four are at home while the other is a trip to a Stadium of Light were opponents Sunderland are winless in 2017. At the Madejski Stadium, they have struggled of late losing three of their last four and winning just one of their last six. Five of eight at their own ground have seen both teams score and the same number of matches have seen exactly two or three goals scored. Reading are poor starters and if the league was decided on half-time scores they would be second bottom of the table. Just four of the 20 goals they have scored have come in the opening 45 minutes.

Reading Team News

Joey van den Berg is available after suspension while Callum Harriott (hamstring), George Evans (thigh), Tennai Watson (hamstring) and Gareth McCleary (groin) are doubts. Jordan Obita (cruciate) is out for the season.

Sheffield Wednesday Preview

It is now five games unbeaten for the Owls with three of these ending all-square and they are now into 11th in the table. This fixture marks the first of a three-game spell against teams in the bottom-half of the division. Away from Hillsborough, they have picked up four points from their last two against opponents both in the top ten. They have failed to keep a clean-sheet in any of their last eight on the road but have only failed to score in two of these. Four of their last five and five of the last seven have seen both teams find the back of the net. Five of the last eight and six of their last ten have gone over 2.5 goals though just one of the last nine has gone over 3.5 goals.

Sheffield Wednesday Team News

Daniel Pudil (hamstring), Sam Hutchinson, Fernado Forestieri (both knee) and George Boyd (shoulder) all remain long-term absentees.
