Reading vs Sheffield Wednesday Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features a home side seeking their first victory against a road side who have won back-to-back games. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Reading made it back-to-back draws as a late Sam Baldock penalty goal enabled them to grab a point at Aston Villa. On Wednesday, they were in League Cup action at home to Watford and they lost 2-0. Sheffield Wednesday won their second successive fixture coming out on top 2-1 at home to Ipswich thanks to a Lucas Joao brace. In the League Cup, they played Tuesday night when they entertained Wolves and suffered a 2-0 defeat. These sides met three times last season (one extra in the FA Cup) and the Owls were unbeaten in all three. Fernando Forestieri and Atdhe Nuhiu both netted twice in these matches.

Betting Tips and Predictions

It is hard to argue with the prices on offer which make Reading the favourites for home advantage but give Sheffield Wednesday respect. Instead, I would recommend looking to some of the other markets. Both these sides would be in the bottom five if the table was decided on the results after 45 minutes so back the game to be level going into the break and the second half to be the highest scoring.

Reading Preview

The Royals have made a slow start to the season with just two points collected from their opening five. They are 23rd sitting just off Ipswich on goal-difference though the expected goals data suggests they should be 16th. At the Madejski Stadium, they have lost both this season and have won just two of their previous 15. The Berkshire outfit have found the back of the net just once in front of their own fans in the last three. Reading have netted just four times this campaign Jon Dadhi Bodhvarsson grabbing three of these. They have not been behind going into the break in any of their five played in the Championship this season.

Reading Team News

Callum Harriott, Dave Edwards (both unknown), Jordan Obita (cruciate), Chris Gunter (thigh) and Garath McCleary (broken ankle) are all set to miss out through injury.

Sheffield Wednesday Preview

The Owls have had a mixed start to the season with two victories, one draw and two defeats from their first five. They sit in 14th place which is exactly where they should be according to expected goals data. Away from Hillsborough, they have lost both in the league this campaign and won just three of their last 13. The Yorkshire outfit have just netted four times from their last five on their travels. Four of the five that Sheffield Wednesday have played in the league this season have seen both teams net. They would be down in 20th if the league was decided on results from the opening 45 minutes.

Sheffield Wednesday Team News

Almen Abdi, Kieran Lee and Gary Hooper are all set to miss out for the Owls.
