Reading vs Preston North End Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides in need of points at opposite ends of the table.  Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Reading will be looking to bounce back after going down to a 3-0 loss to Aston Villa on Tuesday night.  The Royals can have few complaints about the result in a game that turned on a Dave Edwards dismissal after 30 minutes.

Preston dominated against Derby on Easter Monday yet somehow still managed to lose the match 1-0.  Things could have been different if Alan Browne had converted his first-half penalty.

The reverse fixture came early in the season in mid-August and North-End won it 1-0 thanks to a Jordan Hugill goal.  The Lillywhites have won four of the last five head-to-heads between these sides.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Reading have lost just one of their last five at home yet find themselves strong outsiders to Preston.  I could not bring myself to back Preston at these prices though I could not side with the hosts so I will look at other markets for the value.

Both teams to score looks a good angle to approach as this has happened in four of the last five at home for the Royals and nine of the last 12 on the road for the Lilywhites.

The pair have both scored around two-thirds of their goals in the second-half so backing this to be the highest scoring 45 minutes also looks worth an interest.

YES in the both teams to score market

SECOND 45 minutes to be the highest scoring half.

Reading Preview

The Royals have won just one of their last 11 and two of the last 20 and they and are just five points above the bottom three.  They have a mixed run in with two top eight sides still to play, one bottom eight team and three outfits in the middle third.

At the Madejski Stadium, they have lost just one of their last five though have also won just one of their last ten.  Four of their last five in front of their own fans have seen both teams find the back of the net.

Four of the last five and six of the last eight Reading league games have gone over 2.5 goals with two of the last five going over 3.5.  Around 65% of their goals this season have come in the second-half.

Reading Team News

Yann Kermorgant will return after suspension though Dave Edwards will start his. Axel Andresson (ankle), Jon Dadhi Bodhvarsson, Omar Richards (both calf), Callum Harriott, Paul McShane (both hamstring), Tommy Elphick, Joe Mendez and Stephen Quinn (all knee) are doubts.  Jordan Obita (ligament) and Gareth McCleary (broken ankle) are out for the remainder of the season.

Preston North End Preview

Just three points from their last four fixtures has put a dent in the Lilywhites play-off hopes but with six to go they are still in the mix.  They are just three points behind Middlesbrough in sixth and Sheffield United in ninth are their highest remaining ranked opponent.

Away from Deepdale, they have lost just one of their last 12 on the road though this came last time out at Sheffield Wednesday.  Five of their last seven and nine of their last 12 on the road have seen both teams score.

Sean Maguire is in good goalscoring form and has netted seven times in his last nine league appearances.  Just 14% of the league goals Preston have scored this season have come in the opening 30 minutes.
