Reading vs Middlesbrough Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides in opposite halves of the Championship. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Reading stretched their winless run to four though they did pick up a point last time out with a 1-1 draw at Rotherham. A ninth minute Sam Baldock goal saw them set for victory but the Millers netted in the 90th minute to claim a point that was the least they deserved.

Middlesbrough are now five without a victory in all competitions and have lost two in a row including a 1-0 League Cup loss in midweek to Burton. In the league, they lost 2-1 at QPR with a George Saville goal not enough to give them a point though their performance did not merit anything.

The two meetings between the sides last season were won by the Teesiders who have won three straight against the Royals. Each of the last four meetings have seen exactly two or three goals.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Middlesbrough are strong favourites but for a side winless in five and who lost in the League Cup in midweek I could not be backing them. Reading are without a manager and until this is sorted they do not offer any appeal.

Four of the last five for the hosts at their own place and three of the last five on the road for the visitors have gone over 2.5 goals and with this the outside of two in the betting I think it looks worth an interest. Both teams to score also seems to be a value call while combining these in a double also is an option.

Reading Preview

The Royals are still without a manager (at time of writing) it seems to be a two-horse race between Jose Manuel Gomez and Phil Parkinson. Whoever takes over will inherit a side in 21st place just outside relegation on goal-difference.

At the Madejski Stadium, they are without a win in three though two draws means they have lost just one of their last five. The Berkshire outfit have seen both teams score and over 2.5 goals in four of their last five at their own place.

Reading would be as high as tenth on a Championship table decided on the scores after 45 minutes. Just ten of the 35 goals they have conceded this season have come before the break.

Reading Team News

The Royals have an extensive injury list with Liam Moore (calf), John O’Shea (hamstring), Paul McShane (knee),  Omar Richards (hamstring) and Adrian Popa (ankle) all doubts. Dave Edwards (medial collateral ligament), Jordan Obita (cruciate) and Saeid Ezzatolahi (thigh) are long-term absentees.

Middlesbrough Preview

Boro are now without a victory in their last four and have won just two of their last nine fixtures. They have slipped down to sixth and are one point above Forest in seventh and eight behind Norwich in second.

Away from the Riverside, defeat last time out to QPR put to an end a run of six unbeaten on the road for the Teesiders. Each of their last three and four of their last five on their travels have seen both teams net.

Middlesbrough would be as low as 14th in a table decided on the scores going into the interval having been ahead just six times. 11 of the 24 they have scored have come before the break.

Middlesbrough Team News

Rudy Gestede (hamstring) is a doubt though Mo Besic is available following a suspension.  Sam McQueen (cruciate) is a long-term absentee.
