Reading vs Ipswich Town Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides in the relegation places in desperate need of points. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Reading picked up an important three points last time out as they edged Bristol City 3-2 at the Madejski. Yakou Meite grabbed one (his fourth in four) while Liam Kelly and Leandro Bacuna also netted as the Royals won a game they had no right to win.

Ipswich are still in search of that second victory of the season following a 1-1 draw with Preston last time out. They were unlucky not to take all three having been on top but only had a Freddie Sears penalty to show for their efforts.

The Suffolk outfit won both meetings between the sides last season including a 4-0 victory at the Madejski. Five of the last six head-to-heads have gone over 2.5 goals with the one that did not still producing two goals.

Betting Tips and Predictions

On the face of it backing a Reading side with three victories from their last four against bottom of the table Ipswich appears value. The Royals though have a massive injury list and were incredibly lucky to beat Bristol City last weekend while Ipswich should have defeated Preston and showed a glimmer of hope under Paul Lambert.

A bet I prefer then is over 2.5 goals which might seem strange between two strugglers but the hosts have scored nine times in their last four home matches while Town have netted at least once in five of their last seven on the road.

Eight of the 12 the Suffolk side have scored have come in the first-half and a simple bet on them to score in the opening 45 minutes also looks a bit of value against a side who have conceded four times in the opening 45 minutes in their last five homes.

Reading Preview

The Royals win last time was only their second in their last seven and just their fourth of the season. They sit in 22nd place in the Championship though the expected goals data has them one place higher in 21st.

At the Madejski, they have won each of their last two and three of their last four which is good home form. Yakou Meite has three in his last two at home while Sam Baldock has two in four.

Reading would be as high as 14th if the league was settled on the scores at half-time having been behind just three times going into the break. 19 of the 27 goals they have shipped have come after the break.

Reading Team News

The Royals have an extensive injury list with Paul McShane, Omar Richards (both hamstring), Anssi Jaakkola (muscle), Adrian Popa, Vito Mannone, Yakou Meite (all ankle) all doubts while Dave Edwards (medial collateral ligament), Jordan Obita (cruciate), Jon Dadhi Bodvarsson (back) and Saeid Ezzatolahi (thigh) are long-term absentees.

Ipswich Town Preview

The Tractor Boys are now without a win in four and have just one victory for the whole league season. They are bottom of the table five points behind Hull in 23rd and can have few complaints as this is where the expected goals data has them.

Away from Portman Road, it has been a mixed bag of late with a victory, a draw and two defeats. Three of the last four the Suffolk side have played on the road have gone over 2.5 goals.

Ipswich would be up in 21st if the table was decided on the scorelines at half-time having been behind just seven times going into the break. Eight of the 12 that Town have netted have come in the opening half.

Ipswich Town Team News

Myles Kenlock (hamstring), Ellis Harrison (ankle), Jon Walters (Achilles), Emyr Huws (knee) and Teddy Bishop (also hamstring) are long-term absentees.
